How the PGL system works (I think)

Warning, lots of reading, but if you want to know how the PGL system was running then it’s worth the read. If you already know how it works, click to any other link or close your Web browser.

I am pretty sure everybody understands how PGL system works. It is not a complicated system, if you understand the tournament information you can know exactly how the tournament was and is running. It’s seems not everybody understands or at least fully understands how PGL system works, so I will write in my way hopefully so others can understand how PGL works or how it’s be going.

The easiest thing to understand is that there are four groups with 4 players in each group. At first I also thought that each player from each group had to face against players from their group (with standings) and the top 2 would move to the play-offs and that was it. Instead the Groups had to go through a knockout round, where the Groups had to face off against one another in order to decide 2 winning group (upper and lower bracket winners) by playing an NGL like system, a Bo1 single elimination. So you ask what was point of that if the players are just going to be facing the players in their group in a bo3 format? The players of the winning teams would be a given another chance to make it to the play-offs which consist out of 8 players.

So knockout round went as following:

Upper bracket
Group B -> Group A
Group D -> Group C
Group D -> Group B
Lower bracket
Group C -> Group A
Group C -> Group B

Group A and Group C were sent to the lower bracket while Group B and Group D and to face of in the upper bracket. Group D won the upper bracket by beating Group B as Group B was send to the lower bracket. Group C proceed through the lower bracket by beating Group A as they had to face of against group B in the next match. Group A is one of the loser of the knockout round. Group C wins the lower bracket by beating Group B. Group B becomes the other losing team of the knockout round

Winners of the knockout round were Group C and D. Losers of the knockout round were Group A and B.

After the knockout round players went on to facing players from their own Group in a Bo3 double elimination format, but there was one catch. The two winning players (upper and lower bracket winner) of Group C and Group D (who were the winning groups of the knockout round) proceed to the play-offs, while the 3rd and 4th player of Group C and Group D proceed to the Revival stage. While Group A and B (who were the losing groups of the knockout round) only their 1st and 2nd place winner gets to proceed, but not to the play-offs, as losing groups of the knockout round, they are send to the Revival stage while their 3rd and 4th player are eliminated from the tournament.

Things went on as following.

From Group C (knockout round winning group) MYM]Moon and Mouz.Sase were winners of the upper bracket (Moon) and lower bracket (Sase),so they are send to the play-offs while Mouz.Fly100% and wNv.TH000 as 3rd and 4th place are send to the Revival Stage.
From Group D (knockout round winning group) WE.Pepsi.Sky and were winners of upper bracket (Sky) and Lower bracket (Lyn), so they are send to the play-offs while Gravitas.HoT and MYM]Susira as 3rd and 4th place are send to the Revival Stage.

From Group A (Knockout round losing group) We.Pepsi.Like and WE.Pepsi.suhO were winner of the upper bracket (Like) and lower bracket (suhO), but as players from the knockout round losing group they are send to the Revival stage, while the road ends for MYM]Lucifer and wNv.xiaot.

From Group B (Knockout round losing group) Fov and Mouz.ToD were winner of the upper bracket (Fov) and lower bracket (ToD), but as players from the knockout round losing group they are send to the Revival stage, while Fnatic.FoCuS and Level99.ForDream are eliminated from the tournament.

MYM]Moon, Mouz.Sase, WE.Pepsi.Sky and SK.Lyn moved to play-offs where they await 4 players from the Revival stage, while Mouz.Fly100%, wNv.TH000, Gravitas.HoT, MYM]Susira, We.Pepsi.Like, We.Pepsi.suhO, Fov and Mouz.ToD are send to the Revival stage where the 4 players (last 2 from upper bracket and last 2 from lower bracket) will move to play-offs. Revival stage is pretty much a Bo3 double elimination format bracket. Everything from there on is easy to follow.

Sorry for the huge amount of text, hopefully it explains a bit how PGL system was running with all the brackets and group battles. If it’s not help at all then really sorry I could not have been more use.

nice read. Perhaps you should clarify that the battles in the groups were also a bo3 double elimination ... Last edited by at 09.06.2008, 11:30
