eSports and the law

The law has become more and more relevant in electronic sports lately. Recently we saw Sweden Begrip Gaming take legal action against Sweden Ninjas in Pyjamas with regards to the purchase of Sweden Johan "face" Klasson.

This is not the only lawsuit that has hit the news recently. In February this year the American organization, United State- CompLexity, decided to take their former sponsor, Velocity Servers, to court for breaching their contract. CompLexity's CEO, United State- Jason "1" Lake, has also recently had a run in with the U.S Department of Justice when he and his legal team secured an American work visa for the teams latest signing, Sweden Marcus "zet" Sundström.

In an article over at ZoneRank, Niek Maas takes a look at recent affairs and talks to CompLexity's CEO.

Why did compLexity decide to proceed and take the case against Velocity to court? What are your chances of winning/settling down?
We instigated the case mainly out of principle. Far too often companies have treated gamers and gaming organizations like they are jokes and have not respected the rule of legal contracts and agreements. I am very confident in our case, and I do think we will see financial gain, but the reason behind the suit was to send a message to companies that they must honor their agreements and not disrespect gamers and gaming organizations.

eSports is now acknowledged a real sport in the United States and therefore “individuals with extraordinary abilities” can apply for an O-1 work visa. What are the other benefits of this new legal status?
For the current time, the benefit is directly related to the acquisition of a work visa. However, the precedent set allows any further legal work done on behalf of eSports in the U.S. to refer to this decision as proof that professional gaming is a true sport.

CompLexity's work with the legal system has opened a new door for electronic sports in the United States. Prior to their visa application electronic sports was not considered a real sport in the states, however, things have changed. Furthermore, CompLexity's actions against their former sponsor should set an example to the rest of the electronic sports world.

Well its good things are being taken more seriously, I just wish most of the news surrounding it wasn't so gloomy. Brings a shadow over eSports as a bad community. GG gl hf
