How does event ranking work?

Events are separated into 3 different criteria

Event A : An international event including players from all three major regions (Americas, Asian/Pacific, and Europe) on par with a “World Championship” event (e.g. ESWC, WCG). Points awarded will be as follows: 1st 1000, 2nd 750, 3rd 500, 4th 250, 5/6th 100, 7/8th 50, 9th-16th 25 Points.

Event B : An event with international representation from two or three of the major regions, but limited participation due to worldwide format constraints or open registration (e.g. Fire & Ice, Dreamhack): 1st 500, 2nd 250, 3rd 100, 4th 50, 5th-8th 25.

Event C : An event with strong regional participation, but lack significant presence from outside regions. (e.g. ECG, Pan-Am Games, Pan-Asia Games): 1st 150, 2nd 75, 3rd 25.

lol u really think those aussies are the 10th in the world atm? sorry, but instead of taking lan events into account, count the online achievements of teams, wouldn't be that more difficult imo..

flawed imo, its pretty hard to view escw as an A event since alot of the best teams in the world was missing due to visaproblems.

to me this ranking serves only as a fanboy fodder to thorw it at one another - it has no importance in my eyes.

Same reason fnatic can be 1st in the CS-world. Stability and top-3 results.

And had it included 2007 results there wouldn't be any doubt whatsoever.

1. MYM
2. mtw
3. fnatic

or did I strive the wrong sources ?

All in all I believe this ranking is not that significant because the balance between on and offline tournaments in DotA is still pretty one-sided to the online side.

Online events are still relevant you know. They should just be worth maybe a grade less than a LAN event of the same prestige. This seems a tad inaccurate. Also you should probably removing teams that don't play anymore.

This ranking is not supposed to be accurate representation of the best teams in the world. It clearly and comprehensively outlines the method used to create it. Naturally, its accuracy and validity will improve as DotA continues its move towards a game with international tournaments, and more sampling data is provided for the rankings. As of now, only 7 tournaments have been used as sampling data, so naturally things aren't perfect. However, I think that it's a fairly reasonable representation of commendable performances on LAN since the final few months of last year.

As for including online play, while I agree that online events are still relevant, I feel that it is impossible to ignore the inconsistencies of online games. Lag and latency are an obvious factor, especially for Asian and American teams who play against Europeans on European "neutral" hosts. In addition, the use of ringers in matches is almost impossible to prevent in most online circumstances. Finally, not all teams take all online games as seriously as LAN competitions, and may pick or play differently than they would at the ESWC Grand Finals.
