The end of SK's WC3-team?

lyn, sk, wc3

When SK Gaming announced that Korea, South Lyn and Korea, South ReMinD had joined their team last year in July, the WarCraft-community was buzzing with activity. The players had been an integral part of the World Elite-team that had been dominant in the just finished WC3L-season, and boosted SK's squad to new heights. Shortly after the ESWC WC3-champion Korea, South SoJu followed his former team-mates, and in December 07, the last player from the WE-quartet - Korea, South ReiGn - completed the SK squad.

While the team proved to be somewhat succesful in team-events, taking 1st and 3rd in WC3L - alongside a 2nd place in NGL ONE and a 2nd place at Road of the King, the players didn't perform up to par in the solo-tournaments (with Lyn being the exception).

It seems like SK Gaming has taken the consequence of that, and is going to shut down their WC3-team. According to several sources, the German organization has decided not to renew the team's contract, as they are deemed 'too expensive'.

The reasoning behind the action is said to be the 'low price-money involved in team-based WC3-tournaments in comparison to the costs of having a team'.

With this action, SK Gaming is following the footsteps of Mousesports who earlier this summer decided to hand off their WarCraft3 team. Just like Mouz, SK will probably keep some of their players though, as Germany Human Miou and Korea, South Orc Lyn is rumoured to stay on board for solo-tournaments.

As we approached SK's General Manager TheSlaSH with the story, he refused to comment as long as it is only a rumour.

- There is no statement, as we don't see the necessarity to comment on this rumour at the moment at all, he said.

It still remains a question whether SK will support a full WC3-team in the future, as the organization is yet to announce the extension of the player's contracts. Be sure to follow the story right here on myMYM.com in the coming weeks.

hmm "progaming scene" isnt stable in wc3, i didnt expect it to end at least for another 1-2years, hope top class teams remain in business at least until a better 3D rts takes over the esports in that area.

Letting go of 3 big players and dropping out of all the major team-leagues is shutting a team down. Whether or not they are keeping solo-players is not what I am talking about.

"More of Your Money kills Warcraft 3" article posted on SK was so true ...... If anyone would say this is not true I just advice him to read that article again because it describes exactly what happens now and why...

And if a team like SK goes down other teams will go down too for sure, unless players will accept lower wages from teams.

This is a wrong comparison; football teams win a lot of money from selling tickets, TV rights, and a lot of other stuffs while wc3 teams are not winning any money from what I mentioned earlyer but only from sponsors; it means it's really hard for wc3 teams to pay some big wages to players... Ofc, regarding the teams that started to pay a lot their players didn't had the purpose to destroy other teams, but this is what happens ...

Bad comparison in so many aspects that it almost makes me want to believe you didn't made it...

Uhm, MYM is a brand of ESNation A/S, which logically enough uses it to generate income within a lot of different channels, so saying that all MYM has in income is sponsors is very fare from the truth. This also makes your argument wrong, but ok you didn't know that.

And for the salaries, as Phil already stated, the market is regulating itself and and and, don't want to repeat things over and over again :)

You can't compare MYM to SK-gaming or another team or community, as MYM is a part of something a lot bigger than just a team or community and we have synergies within that organization that makes it pay off via income streams that are not possible for a team and or community.

I didn't said a word about MYM's finances, it's not my business. What MYM does with its money does not matter to anyone. I just think you can't compare the income a football clube like Chelsea has in comparison to their players wages. Don't mind values, just think of everything in percentages. Although I understand Carmac's point in his article, I don't fully agree and I'm not refering to it, just the comparison.

Signed. Football analogies are horrible for eSports; especially since the economy in eSport is.. let's just call it fragile.
