MYM - To source or not

As the title might state, this is not a piece on accepting Counter-Strike Source or not. This is about the correct sourcing of news that is found in our eSports community. It is frowned upon, it is never over-looked, and it always brings many fans saying that its a complete and utter waste of time to argue about, but there is something to it, and hopefully I can address it.

Many people believe that it all stems down to the writers pride, and how such an event can damage their 'ego'. This may adhere to a select few, but in the end its about YOUR organization, which you so deeply respect, being shown and represented on ANOTHER site's news articles. This may seem tacky but it is like everyday business where work must be referenced and correctly sourced to represent the party who put the time and effort in to produce such work. This leads me to two situations which I was absolutely appalled to see such pathetic attempts of sourcing news.

Firstly I will not state the parties who committed such 'crimes' and secondly this is my own personal opinion on the matter and does not reflect the likes of MeetYourMakers.

The first thing that got to me was when a certain site made a news post where they directly copy/pasted a paragraph of mine (which was edited and changed by me from the original source to make it somewhat unique), and was used with a source to the original site. It was clearly a case of ignorance by that sites news poster. I tried to speak to the poster and an admin from the site but I was completely ignored. Mmm, nice.

The second case which struck a nerve was when I was given exclusive access to a certain happening in the Counter-Strike world. This news was later sourced by many sites but then one of the more well known ones decided to use a statement that was given to us and incorrectly made it look like that statement was theres. And also the incorrect sourcing. This is a small thing when you first think about it, but in the bigger picture we can see that it just adds to this growing disregard.

Surely it is not that hard to change and modify an original news post and correctly post it with the right source. Maybe these journalists have too much to do and so they just quickly use a copy/paste, ignore the site they found the news on, and put together a sad attempt on releasing news. We will never know, but assuming incompetence and total ignorance ranks high up on my list.

In the end this matter only concerns us writers who feel our organizations are being cheated on, but with everything in life, we as humans feel a strong connection to the work we do and how it must be correctly done with the utmost effort. Certain people admire the work they do, and try to achieve as much as they can, but when an ignorant party feels they are too superior or might 'take a blow' because they can't see themselves showing off a competition's identity, then we know that this has all come down to some pathetic rivalry.

Sourcing is the only way of showing respect to the people that wasted their time and effort on producing news, articles, etc ... I agree with you on the fact that it is really sad to see many organizations ( including well known ones ) not stick to the rule of correctly sourcing their news ... Sad days for the writers :\

I agree that it should be done but we can't expect everyone to do things correctly. Let's be honest, we've all written unsourced news at some point.. The best way to go about tackling this is simply by doing your own work correct and setting an example which people can follow. At least that's what I think :) only dead fish go with the flow...
