Olav "Creolophus" Undhiem won the World Cyber Games 2007 by defeating the two time defending champion
Xiaofeng "Sky" Li, 2-1 on the main stage in front of a big crowd which was basically cheering for Sky.
After that amazing and maybe also a little bit unexpected victory, this friendly and upstanding guy was picked up by different pages for interviews. One question kept occuring in every interview: "Will you really stop playing WarCraft III now?". MeetYourMakers Also did an interview with him, which is actually a video interview, which can be found here.
But now Creo catches the speaker's eye once again and wrote quite a rousing blog full of history. Furthermore, he gives one final flashback over a gaming career that is in many ways could make him a role model story, that is full of success and glory and that has also some darker moments. And the man from Norway starts with those words:
Early times in 4K I joined up with 4K in Spring 2006; about one and a half year ago. I had already played at a pretty high wc3l level in 64AMD and fnatic, but it was a naturally a rather big step to join arguably the most successful wc3 team of all times. Just before I got the offer from 4K; I was already thinking about gaming less as it took quite a lot of time just to prepare for wc3l matches and small tournaments for fnatic. I decided that if I was to join 4K I better give it my best try and thus took a year off studies to just concentrate on gaming. Of course it was a rather radical decision in a country which doesn't have any traditions in terms of esports and gaming. I'd say quitting school to play a computer game all day leaves you somewhere between the drug addicts and the jailbirds in the social ranks. However it's probably one of the best decisions I've taken so far =) |
I recommand to read the full blog over at 4Kings, click here.
It was the last evening of the WCG 2007 in Seattle. Creo had just won the gold medal and right after this he spoke to the press in a small room filled with a load of cameras. He looked totally knackered and tired. But in his eyes were that blaze! He was totally happy and totally stunned. I think he couldn't believe in that moment what happened.
Then he took part in the closing ceremony, where he got his medal. Everyone took which might end up being one of the last pictures of Creo. And also Moon and Sky shook his hand, a gesture worthy for such a gentleman.
After the WCG closed he took the shuttle bus back to the hotel. And you know, I am not that into WC3, but this shy guy was sitting there in the shelter of the darkness in the bus, with the seat next to him, empty. He held fast onto his check. I saw him and moved over to him. Took the empty seat and congratulated him on his victory. Though I of course knew I was not the first to do so. I started talking to him, about the games and stuff. It was a one, maybe two minutes chat. Then I dared to ask him for a video interview. And he replied in the manners of "yeah sure, no problem, why not". You know, he answered like it was for him the most ordinary thing in the world to do a video interview with a guy he never met before after a great victory in the bus that yields you home. I was totally unprepared, had no idea what to ask.
And we did this interview and though I have almost no idea about the WC3 scene I felt secure, I felt good. And it was due to the fact that he gave me that feeling! I felt like I was sitting to a some kind of friend and a guy that I knew for years.
I will never forget this interview, and I will never forget this moment in my life. It was one of the most special things that I ever experienced so far. You know, everything was perfect in that moment. Creo - maybe one of the the most friendly and pleasant guys in the scene; the victory, the night, the bus, Seattle sleeping outside the bus window, only some streetlights and the girl from Fragbite who held the camera.
And after the interview I kept sitting there. Happy. Satisfied. And we talked about Norway, the winter, and about how there is too much darkness and less managment in eSports, and StarCraft II. There is hope friends!
And this is eSports - isn't it special?

For an year and a half Creolophus achieved what most pros won't achieve for 10.It's much like - He came, he saw, he conquer...While all the buzz around Moon, Sky, ToD etc etc he quietly worked his way to the top.And that is where he is right now - at the very top in wc3.And there is no better time to finish your career. He is my favorite pla
Good luck in everything Mr. Undheim! For her I'm the Cookie monster...

im not into WarCraft III, but I read Creolophus' blog and Crow's story; they both are great, and that blong shows a nice person, shows a winner. He picked the right time to retire, because he will be remembered as the best war3 pla
As for the sitting alone in the bus thing, I guess he didn't manage to know a lot of friendly people there... but we shouldn't be speculating this, because his private life shouldn't be our business. I'll be nicer when you're smarter.

Creo had an awesome end of his wc3 career.
Think he really did the right decision with going on studying.Maybe we hear from him again in sc2. After 2004 this wcg was one of my favorites with an awesome win from creo, finally overcome skys win streak. Better light a candle than curse the darkness!
