China limits online gaming time

anti-addiction, china, col, complexity, gaming, time

Today the British news channel BBC News announced that the Chinese government took another step right against the net addiction of Chinese gamers. This issue is one of the hottest topics in China at the moment.

The government decided to make the online gaming companies in China install "anti-addiction-software" within three months and consequently to limit the amount of time players spend while playing online games. The software limits the amount of points players under the age of eightheen can score if they play more than three hours a day.

So if a gamer who is aged under 18, the software will give out an information text on the screen that says "unhealty game time" and they will also gain no points after reaching the three hours edge.

To validate the age, each gamer has to register his game by giving the real name and the identification card number.

Here is an excerpt:

China seeks to 'limit game hours'

The Chinese government has clamped down on the amount of time youngsters can spend playing online games, according to the official news agency Xinhua.

Under-18s who play for more than three consecutive hours a day will have limits imposed on the amount of points they can score, the agency reported.

Online game companies based in China have been given three months to install the so-called anti-addiction software.

It is part of an on-going attempt to limit how long people are online.

A recent report from the China National Children's Centre said that 13% of under-18s who used the web were addicted to online gaming...

I don't know if a governmental forceful control of online-time is the right way, rather not, I believe. But since online addiction in China is widely spread they definitely got to do something.

on one hand it is a smart thing, keeping 'em away from the evils of net addiction, on the other hand - you can't fight against it, only profit from it. so better for them to earn money from the addicted kids, nobody will call them manipulators of ppl's life or whatever they'll be called for acts like this one.
If force won't work, use greater force.

A government has the responsibility to fight any addiction. They can't just abuse it. Just the way is not the right one, in my opinion.

Really glad to see this eventually comes to scene :)

#2 If you are a Chinese and objective you will agree to it I think, unless you are also as addicted to the online games as some Chinese kids.

#6 no! I can be online for more than three hours without being addicted. This forceful control of my leisure is a intervention into my freedom which I would never accept.

I don't think the government should have a say in how much people are playing video games. It's up to their parents not to buy them games, internet, or a computer.

Surely educating people is better than actually imposing time limits?

#13 there's still lans for that.

well obviously the government had to do something since the parents are slacking off or too busy working overtime while their kids is spending all their savings in a lan.

#14 well by setting a time limit government is educating them...right :)

wow zombies are like dogs. dont feed them, they will starve to death and will obviously have to listen and do according to what their master says :)

what the hell is the government thinking? you know how much profit a game company can potentially lose because of this "anti addiction crap"? There's a lot of people died in front of a pc because god knows how populated china is... comparing to Korea/Japan, China has like tonnes more people. But by far Korean/Japanese are more "freak" at gaming by all means.

A government body should not take control of xxxxxxxxxx amount people's leisure activity because of XX amount of people died in front of a comp. OH YEA!, three hours playing a game consecutively is unhealthy.. and it pops up a message? i mean... how gay-ass is that? What if you stay afk for sometimes like leaving a store open in game?..

This kind of so called "anti addiction software" just WON'T WORK. What? Do you think those people that stay behind a computer 24/7 would read that little message that pops up a few times a day?

no mate!

Purely stupid and pointless indeed.

You are one ignorant Australian buddy and you obviously dont care that people are dying because of a stupid game. i hope that you're the only one who thinks that way over there pal.

"A government body should not take control of xxxxxxxxxx amount people's leisure activity because of XX amount of people died in front of a comp"

- playing the dumbest game ever made and even giving away your life for it. - you call that leisure activity ??? WOOHOO! terrorists must have had lots of fun during their leisure activities that they organised for the 9/11 dude.

i hope that the kangaroos beat the shit out of you and that you die and i hope that no one will notice either since australia's population is big too. its not like an ignorant kid like you will make a huge difference, im sure it will only make australia a better place to live in.

they dont care if lans have to shut down. lans are not helping in any way. and arent helping china to grow and make it a better country to live in, instead teenagers are getting addicted to them, wasting all their money and time. especially when they could have spent it on much worthy stuffs.

=.= Sorry i'm Chinese myself that's why i'm defending them, don't generalize Australian. And hey!, exactly how many people died in front of a computer? and how many people in china are effected by this new system? it's just not fair for the rest aren't it. They don't care if internet cafe have to shut down eh? they don't care that those people who opens those shops will go broke or whatever... yes that's what you think mate.

HOW one spends his money and HOW one spends his time is depended on himself. IT is fun for the guy to play on the internet therefore it's his leisure. The point is HE enjoys doing it.

Only because of a minimal that screws up and died in front of a computer barely have a say on the rest.

ps. i ate kangaroos pie this morning.
