ShyGirl: Me > Burning

burning, girl, ksss, loveen, nirvana, shygirl

The Chinese eSport coverage site SGamer has conducted an interview with ShyGirl, captain of Nirvana.cn. myMYM.com has brought you the translated version.

With the hype surrounding the recent "Loveen phenomenon," and the formation of 3 DotA powerhouses, Internationa- Nirvana.Int, China Nirvana.cn, and Malaysia Nirvana. My, the 4th team, China Nirvana.Girl, finally gets some of the limelight. SGamer has conducted an interesting interview with the captain, China ShyGirl, nicknamed Little 8, discussing her new team and career as a female gamer. Here is the translated interview:

Little 8Thank you Little 8 for accepting our interview, say hello to everybody please.

Hi everybody, this is Little 8, the current Nirvana.Girl captain.

Since you are the first lady of Chinese female DotA, do you have any pressure?

Not really first lady of Chinese DotA, there's a lot of better players than me, they love DotA way more than me. Being a captain, pressure obviously exists, however without pressure there's no motivation. Haha.

Why do people call you Little 8? Are you the 8th in the family?

If I say it took me 8 years to finish primary school would you believe me?

Why did you pursue a pro career in DotA, anything to do with our lovely Thunder Boy (nickname for Burning)?

I started because I am female, had nothing to do with Thunder Boy, he doesn't agree with me going pro.

Simply introduce Nirvana.Girl for us please, being the captain and the team's carry do you have any words to your players? Any goals in 2010?

Now we haven't started our exhausting training plans, I obviously want my players to concentrate and fix their minds, from entertainment to professional, and face everything with the right attitude. The goal for 2010 is obviously fight it out with the other female teams out there (PMS watchout!). Only competition will bring about improvement, and the competition between female teams seems to be more fair.

What's the biggest obstacle for a girl to pursue a professional career?

Obviously family members and my own mindset. Mainly my own mindset, everybody is different and has different thoughts on this matter.

I've seen your Shadow Fiend before, very efficient, it's a match for Brother Bear's (Ksss) Warlock with his 20 minute Guinsoo, Shiva, Divine Rapier and Stygian, we also know that Thunder Boy used to love Shadow Fiend. Do you like heroes such as Shadow Fiend or something more cool and shifty, just like Thunder Boy is all cool and shifty?

I never really thought of Thunder as cool and shifty...About Shadow Fiend, I know a lot of girls that like him. I haven't used him in recent times, I have no specific hero choice.

Can you give us some review and thoughts on the past and the future? Any regrets or something you really want to achieve?

The biggest regret in DotA is that I can't be on the same team with my best partner. Regarding thoughts is basically to not have any regrets.

Where do you train? VS? HF? ZMR? (Note: These are abbreviations refering to gaming platforms in China) No advertisement allowed right?

Still no training so far. Still fixing our minds, we'll probably use ZMR to train.

Everybody call you and Thunder Boy the perfect pair, anything you want to say to him?

Me > Burning

What do you think about Nirvnana.cn? Any thoughts?

Nirvana.cn is a very strong team, I don't think they are weaker than any other Chinese teams. As for the male players, I think Little White (nickname for insence) is a very good captain. He cares a lot for his players and Nirvana.Girl. He's very calm and quiet. I won't say much about Xiami and Banana, I think you can see their strength from future games. Obviously with these two in the team, the general mood is always happy. Zhou has always been a core member. Don't know much about Zippo, I think he's a bit shy, or we are just not close. However I think the best thing ever is to have a good manager and a good sponsor.

Where are you training currently, people in Wuhan want to meet you guys.

In Wuchan, Guanggu area. (Note: Areas of Wuhan, provincial capital of Hubei) I'll display the exact location later haha.

What are your 3-measurements? (Note: Bust/Waist/Buttocks) Very annoying question.

I swear I don't even know myself, seriously not because I don't want to answer.

Finally thank you for the interview, any shoutouts?

Thanks to everybody who supports Nirvana, we will work hard, and also thanks to Little White and Brother Tang (nickname for Loveen) for their constant support and praise.

Female only gaming competitions and teams are fucking sexist and demeaning to women everywhere (especially the competition part). Why can't they just mix teams, females and males? Oh yeah, I forgot, 99% of the players aren't mature enough for concepts like equality.
(4 months ago)  #62 Pandaeyes

Equality is kind of overrated >_> Equal rights should of course be a given, but the notion that Females are equal to Males even when we differ biologically, socialogically, and psychologically is laughable. Case in point: Twilight.

Not really, i'm sure all female competitive players are looking forward to Females only gaming competitions. At least for my team and I, ever since i stepped into competitive gaming, i've always been looking forward to play in an all-females DotA competition.

And FYI, it is not exactly immature thinking which forbades mixed gender teams, males generally have their competitiveness in their nature. Nobody would want a team mate who's pulling down their team playing performances, and you will be thinking, change another player. If you're changing another player, in this field, there's more Males than Females. The probability of having a better player obviously surfaces in the population of males.

No competitive males wants to lose a match, IF you're talking about a competitive team. And Hello, in which part of this interview you do not understand that it is about competitive gamer. I repeat, COMPETITIVE. Its either you're good or you suck. NO EQUALITY.

Last but not least, all-females teams are way cooler. =) Not something you see everywhere!

Indeed, you're either good or you aren't. So why should there be female competitions? If you're a female and you suck then why should you expect the world to treat you with a handicap (especially the gaming world)? If you're looking to be a professional gamer and somehow do not find this divide in male / female gaming to be horrific (especially in the GAMING world where it doesn't require physical superiority), then your acceptance of it can only be attributed to the pussy factor (no, I don't mean cowardice): your marketability comes only from your being a female, an object to lust after, something the other gamers who are 15 year old males that can't get laid can find peculiar, an unequal specimen of the human race, a spectacle at a sausage festival.

I find this very notion abhorrent. If a female is just as competitive as a male, the competitions should not be divided (plus, the scarcity of the prizes should not be split for a competition that's only there for people ogle at). That there are more males that play the game should not be an argument against gender-free competitions (and for gender-based affirmative action competitions). Gaming should be a place that is gender neutral.

If you're a female and you train enough (and have the talent) then you should be able to be as good as any other male and make it into a team that is full of talented males. The reverse also holds true. If you suck, you aren't meant for the competition, regardless of what your sex is. There is nothing in the ferociousness of competitiveness that stems from the nature of a certain sex, especially in gaming.

oh, FYI, female gamers don't demand the whole world to treat us with a handicap. If your statement makes any sense to you, do come up with some examples.

And you got the right word, marketability. Why female gamers get so much attention? If you ain't gay, you should know why. Again, fyi, we don't demand to do interviews in such gaming forums, people approaches us.you might want to vent yoour anger on these people and tell them your perspective.

Again, too bad, sorry for being a female gamer. ;)

Since there is no physical requirements for dota (except maybe having hands), i cant see why you would want do seperate male and female competition.
However there is a valid reason why you want all female leagues. Less girls than boys game dota and therefore it could be smart to hav a female league in regards to getting more girls interested in competitative dota.
(4 months ago)  #20 rYvSoitGoes

I don't see how it will help get more girls interested in DotA. If they are interested to play competitively, they'd enter the gender-free leagues, wouldn't they?

And also the idea that female dota gamers are profitable (much less marketable) is laughable. There might be a few curious downloads of replays, sometimes views of female profile teams (to see the hot ones), but profitable? Watching a team of talentless females playing DotA against the likes of MYM is already painful. Watching them play against each other is even worse.

That we see a member of a female DotA team completely disregard their own social standing in society is already sad (cloaked by the delusion that she thinks she's somehow marketable because some kid nicknamed Loveen decides to play pimp). A step that e-sports, if it should ever be taken seriously, and DotA itself, is taking in the wrong direction.

You don't get whipped for it in Singapore >_>. In reality, the police rarely cares about that sort of thing, and even if you do get caught spitting, littering or chewing gum in Singapore, legally you can only get up to a fine.

And also, the "law" that's being brandied about here is the Islam law with regards to improper female behaviour. They also get punished for improper attire, or hanging around alone with male(s) before marriage.
*The islam law, however, is legally accepted (correct me if i'm wrong) throughout Malaysia, and there was a recent furore about such a punishment being dealt out.

The notion that we should ignore Malaysian's comments just because several select people ( and here I am talking about the politicians ) are retarded is laughable at best, and bordering on bigotry. >_>

By that logic, since India has = Population with China, they must be just as good at DotA as China. Or even better, since there are less Danish players than Chinese players, should there be an all Danish only tournament at a LAN?

Talent is talent. There's no need for this gender division. There are better ways to promote female gaming (i.e. sponsoring the talented ones).

The absolute population is irrelevant. The # of dota players in china > the # in india. So it follows that china should have better players.

More male dota players than female, hence, males are superior.

OK, you still don't get the picture. THERE ISN'T ANY SINGLE GENDER ONLY COMPETITIONS! Wake up your delusioned mind. FYI, till now, females are still joining competitions that don't requires you to be either female or male.

Darn, i have to spell out every single word.

And please don't include the word 'We', you don't expect/assume every one to think like you.

And if you're still on the topic of female gaming scene, why is there a need to pull in Social Standing in Society?

And if you're STILL talking on Marketability, my team did way way way better than you. Look at you, my team is recognised and known by so many countries and watch, your rYv SoitGoes. Who? Who the heck is that?

I am not talking about my accomplishments. I don't have to accomplish ANYTHING and my criticism still holds true.

Whether or not I'm gay is really none of your business. But of course that you are conditioned in your society to suddenly use ad hominem attacks (such as ARE YOU GAY BECAUSE YOU DON'T LIKE GIRL ONLY TEAMS / COMPETITIONS?) explains a lot as to why you don't see anything wrong with a non-physical sport being separated by gender.

Um, because in physical sports there are significant differences between male and female bodies?

It's my business if I see something unjust. If you were to see a man steal from a woman and physically harm her, would you stand by saying 'this woman has had no accomplishments and I'm not the victim, why should I care?'

God, you're seriously living in a backward world (warped logic and a 19th century perspective...)

Hi MsJovial, how are you? Damn girl, youre so good looking and shit, I hope one day we can actually play DotA together lololol. But seriously, as far as this argument goes, I think you should just stop at where you are at now.

Am seriously tempted to give my own opinion on what I think about Msjovial's opinions but I don't really know how to. Most of the points brought forward by you doesn't really make much sense. But I can understand a bit what you are trying to say.

With that said, SoitGoes has a fucking good point. Although I agree with you, my friend, this is the world yo. There are alot of tourneys being organized that participants who want to participate have to meet a certain criteria. take for example amateurs only tourney. (alot of these type of tourneys are being organized in malaysia) The reason why there are all female tourneys is to cater for aspiring female gamers who want to enter tourneys that they feel they have a better chance at of winning. same goes to an all amateur tourney. there isnt really a universal law that states that organizers are forbidden from organizing competitive tourneys for players to participate at a top level that they will normally not have the chance to do so in a tourney that is free for everyone to enter.

take ur pill dude. girls play dota for fun ok?? why would they want to compete with guys. why u barge in with the mindset they should play gender free leagues?

Flawed opinion in ur case:
They dont want the handicap. Most girl player knows the nature competitiveness in male dota players. U think they will spend 10 hours each day to match us guys? I dont think so.
They play dota for fun and fortunately, the world enables them to fight competitively between themselves because yes, they are marketable.

I just realize how obnoxious a person can be. Speaking about fairness when all they care about is their own 'perfect' opinion and assumption. If the world is 'fair' as u think. Why should ur opinion/judgement worth 'more' than the others?
(4 months ago)  #34 MmMAstatine
Astatine
When you're creating an all-girls team, the first criteria (being female) obviously gives you a much smaller pool of talent to choose from. With such a small population of female gamers, it's hard to find a girl who can hold her own against the entire world, let alone five of them... Then expecting them to work together and like each other is another story altogether.

I'm a little conflicted here. On one hand, I will admit that attention is something that everyone likes, male or female. Heck, I relish attention sometimes. And perhaps that's one of the push factors in making a female team. We get more attention even when we suck.

But as alluring as the idea seems, I will agree, it is abhorrent. There comes a point when you realise how difficult it is to succeed in tournaments when you're up against teams that pick their players on merit and not gender, when you realise just how bad you are in Dota (by 'you' I mean me) and the only reason you're getting any attention is because you have boobs and wear a skirt. When you accomplish anything, it's 'Oh wow, and they're an all-girl team!' On one hand it would feel good to break old notions that we can't do anything as well as the boys can. But the times where that happens are few and far between.

It takes a very secure and comfortable (and of course, talented) female to play in a competitive mixed team. There is always the stigma associated with female gamers and you'd always be second guessing yourself, and wondering if your team secretly considers you the weak link just because you're female.

And I think as human beings sometimes we are handicapped because we want to be. When I played with a female team, we never had high hopes. In fact often all we wanted was to get through the qualifying rounds. Do we want to win? Yes, most definitely. But it's always a lot easier to have an excuse when you lose badly, even if the excuse is something as painful to hear as 'they're girls'.

Then again from the point of view of a male team who is shafted in terms of attention compared to a female team which might be equal to that male team in terms of skill (or lack thereof) it can be quite frustrating not to be given equal treatment because 'they're girls' once again.

I'm definitely all for equality and I hope that we can have enough girls for us not to be considered a novelty... For there to be enough SKILLED girls that they won't segregate us by gender, for a platform where we won't be placed on a pedestal or treated with disdain purely because our gender.

I hope I was coherent enough here.

Ok let's get something out of the way first.

The mere existence of female only competitions is not enough to say that "Girls aren't good enough to play with guys." However, the fact that the teams that enter these don't enter regular competitions, team leagues or even scrim against guys most often, does mean that they can't play with guys.

It basically equates to minor league. These female teams just aren't as good as almost any male teams.

I would not want to watch most of these teams play because the quality of play is just very low. Most of these teams would not make any money or headlines if not for the fact they are female. It's just a fact.

I've played on WoW arena teams with women before that were great at the game. She didn't need her own league because she was skilled. The existence of Female CS and DOTA tournaments is because these gamers aren't as skilled.

It is exploitation, and that's okay. It's capitalism.

But lets not pretend that any female team could even take a map from top male teams. If they could, they would play with men.

Kudos to PMS for actually trying to play in regular competitions on occasion.
