GIGA TV stops all operations

esl, esports, giga, tv

CEO of GIGA TV Stephan Borg has announced that the company will close its doors and stop all operations.

http://www.mymym.com/gfx/gigalogo.jpgThe German TV channel GIGA, known for its eSports coverage broadcasting of different competitions, has terminated all operations with immediate effect. CEO Stephan Borg announced that just minutes ago in a blog post on the station's official homepage.

Borg says, "our owner Premiere AG wants to focus in the future more on their core business which is pay TV". He adds that the advertisment market for TV stations became very difficult lately which has "poignant effects on small stations as ours", especially during the current economic crisis.

Furthermore, it became very difficult to sell advertisment within the gaming industry, and also print magazines have issues to find partners.

GIGA was launched about ten years ago as a show on NBC Europe and opened in 2006 GIGA II using IP-TV technology, which focused more on the eSports' market.

Throughout the years, GIGA created a huge fanbase and community, which included news coverage as well as a chat and forum system. However, early 2008 brought changes for the company as the German pay TV station Premiere purchased GIGA.

Six months later, a huge number of hosts and employees left the company and in July GIGA's whole concept  was renewed. Instead of having one or two-hour shows, shorter shows replaced the concept that had been shown for years. The company also started to drop eSports content totally.

Already in Autumn 2007, after nearly 18 months of streaming, GIGA II shut down continued streaming on November 15th. That was not the end of the story, as ESL-TV started replacing GIGA II.

I think he means the part where it references-

"That was not the end of the story, as ESL-TV started replacing GIGA II."

Which would reduce GIGA' marketing and make that project less appealing to their parent company since that's all they offer is marketing.

Mess with the best die like the rest
