F4F: Ks.int caught red handed

f4f, nozg, vigoss

Ks.int receieved a final warning at the F4F tournament and a default loss after trying to use a stand-in for their latest match against ucpro.

F4F

In Ks.int's latest Farm 4 Fame match, the team was caught red-handed when they tried to use former dmZ player Norway Nozg on United Kingd- Ks.Gunz's account.

Internationa- Kingsurf.international were facing Malaysia ucpro in the 3rd round of the 6th edition of the F4F and they were exposed in the drafting process where the F4F admin Germany Mathias 'dopeshow' Schmedeshagen exposed Ks.int at the attempt to use a stand-in.

He was going to stream the game for all the viewers and was doing his usual checks, one of those checking IPs of the players, to make sure none of the teams are using stand-ins, in this case Ks.int was using a stand-in.

dopeshow found out that Gunz was playing from a Norwegian IP while he should have been playing from a United Kingdom IP. Comparing the IPs between the two accounts, dopeshow found out that they are evenly matched and he then confronted Ks.int ingame with the results and the conclusion, which led to Ks.int getting a default loss and a final warning.

After Nozg recieved his punishment, which resulted in him being banned from F4F for a period of time, he contacted  the F4F admin crew and apologised for his deed and his team eventually made a deal with the F4F admins to reduce the punishment, which also led the team giving its word that it would never again break any of the rules.

myMYM.com caught up with dopeshow for a statement about the case and the issue in general.

Quoting Germany Mathias 'dopeshow' Schmedeshagen:

The problem we have to face seems to be rooted in the depth of the players' minds. I guess all tournaments are infiltrated by the fakenicking/ ringer usage or whatever you may call it. It looks like people are not able to act maturely and responsiblly when they are behind a computer, this is a general problem of gaming, but especially in DotA we have only limited ways to bust those who act against regulations. A player once stated to me that I should be thankful they play their match with a stand-in, because fulfilling a matchdate is to rate higher than fair play - here the use of only rostered players. In my opinion the players have to rethink what they are doing and in which times they are playing,  everyone wants to see DotA as an eSport title taken seriously and they all want rising prize galores and stuff professional eSport titles are granted. The other side of this way DotA is actually on is the behaviour of players and organisations.

If I was a sponsor and if I put my private or my company's money into DotA, I would focus on values of fair play and maturity, I would not like to see my brand being named in one sentence with someone who fakenicks, uses maphack or anything negative for my investment. I guess this is a major problem, rumors say that mouz stepped away from DotA cause the scene and its protagonists are not ready for serious eSport and I know that a lot of potential sponsors check the forums, the websites and the scene in general before they invested it. This is why DotA will suffer in the future, sponsors are frightened, organisations don't want to put their limited money into it because players don't act like they are supposed to.

We had quite a bunch of examples how not to act as a player in F4F, and I remember other tournament admins fighting the same problems with more or less the same individuals, they want to take, but they are afraid to give, just like Ks.int's problems lately; they want to be taken seriously, they want to earn the points in F4F for mouz, they want much more and they argue about the prize money we can offer in Europe, the accomodations of the events, the regulations we set up, etc. If vigoss, jolie or gunz had taken DotA seriously like they are supposed to be as they are members of one of the worlds top teams, they wouldn't have had to ask nozg to step in the hole. It's always about the amount of effort you are willing to spend, so maybe our continent's so called professionals should take a look to the Asian teams who travel long distances to play from an internet cafe against them, the result may be that events may occur and they get rewarded in a better way. Acting mature, calm and professional is the way leading victory, if they can accept and live with this I am sure that DotA, and also we at DotA-league will put even more effort into the competitive scene and in the end those cool events like we will start with in Hannover (but with other dimensions of prize money I guess).

This guy -> Mathias 'dopeshow' Schmedeshagen <- will carry dota in the future. Well to bad I guess nothing much we can do.

''myMYM.com caught up with Schmedeshagen for a short statement about the case and the issue in general.''

Bullshit. The longest short statement I have ever read.

we had to use a fakenicker so we can actually play this match since we were not able to play on the 2 next days. now plz dont come with ur '' ask admin and u can play after deadline '' bullshit, last time we had a similar problem with mouz, instead of giving us 1 more day u threat us with defloss. idk what u guys think with inviting asian teams to an online competition.. its insanely hard to schedule games with them + they lag horribly on any host, so u cant even say the match is entertaining, neither for the watcher nor for the players..
about our points with mouz, mousesports officially made a statement that ALL fucking online rights we participate in goes to KS.INT, they even send an email to u... still u refused to give us our point.. so basically u dont wanna give us our point because ksint exists of 4 mouz players? instead of 5? ok we lose 14 points for 1 player, i see.
anyway this is no excuse, the ban is fair, eventhough ucpro still wanted to play the game - which we won in less than 15minutes btw

Oi, you have to look at it from both sides of the argument. At first glance, it seems like a team was using a ring-in illegally, but if you take a deeper look, the reason they struggled to field a team is because of the other team (being in Asia), and he is right with the lag making the game far less entertaining for both the players and the spectators.

They lost their points when their team changed names/sponsors (which was completely unjust) so they were already pissed off. Kuroky accepted the penalty DESPITE THE OTHER TEAM STILL WANTING TO PLAY THE GAME. Surely, if the other team is willing to let the other team play with a ring-in (which wouldn't raise the skill level due to the lack of chemistry/practise) the admins can be happy with that. Obviously not.

So F4F would have them play with 4 players. What a joke. And wasn't dopeshow the one saying 'everyone wants to see DotA as an eSport title taken seriously,' yet here they are recommending a team to play with 4 players.
(last year)  #27 st0rm_sh4dow

seriously must be fun scheduling vs teams in Asia on a tight deadline.

Probably goes something like:
Euro:“hey you guys play at 4am this time and next time we’ll play at 4am ok???”

Asian:“ok you guys have good host right?”

Euro:“ldo”

Then ofc both teams spend 2 hours finding host and ends up playing a 300ms+ awesome game... ducy?

I think what he implies is that the admins only found out as they geo-traced the IP-adress. I don't know where Gunz lives, but if he lives in the UK and a UK guy plays instead of him, it doesn't look suspicious when you do a geotracking of the IPs :-)

The thing is that in Estonia most of the ISP's don't provide static IP's(unless u pay more). If the case is the same in other countries you can't detect "cheating"(couldn't find better word at the moment).

So ridicilous to not give the teams a few more days so ALL can play with PlayerS IN THE TEAMS. What if vigoss or whoever couldn't play due to important irl things? It's even more ridicilous to bring asians teams in the european internet tourneys as KuroKy said.

What dopeshow said sounds alright, but in an eSport where you are paid for nothing but only for the 2-per-year lan trips and possibly receive some hardware, it's fckin hard to give 100% for it. After all, these are the people that study, are gonna grow up and do something else if they don't get paid for spending a lot of time for the game, they are eventually not going to take it all too seriously. Putting Asians into online tournaments is just another obstacle there that doesn't help at all, starting with awkward match scheduling and ending with "nice" hosts. Just MAYBE let Europe&Asia meet only offline, I believe this is going to save everybody a lot of headaches in the long run.

This is a bit of a joke. Its just fucking hard to play on so short deadlines vs asian teams. U always have to play at night or they have... Its not like all players are students or they get paid their life for playing dota or whatever... Kuroky is still a kid, its not like his mother allows him to play games from 3-5 in the night in the mid of the week (my mother wouldnt have allowed this for sure!!).

@the doping argument... its like they call u doped if u have to play if u were drunk the evening before, imo its not rly doping if u get a weaker player or a player u have not played with before (or not so much).

Imo games > strict rules... just interpret the rules appropriate and u r fine. 2 much scandals in dota!

Teh decision was right. The rules are rules. Though I myself am kinda lenient with this, I check IPs only if I received info of teams using ringers regularly.

As Heldarion already pointed out, DotA is still not big enough of an e-sport for the all the professionals to give everything in it. You can't get enough money out of playing DotA, but hopefully this will change in the future.

Most of the teams use ringers, that's a known fact. And this is all for the fun, so I guess it's not that big of a problem, especially if the ringer isn't better or not much better than the original player. But a lot of people would abuse the system if it wasn't forbidden.

No offense to Ks.Int, great team, but if NozG got banned for faking someone's name, why isn't the rest of the group of people involved banned as well?

Nozg may be the one faking a name, but the person who asked him to do it is just as guilty. Anyone who knew about it as just as guilty as Nozg.

Ks.Int is awesome though, so whatever. When F4F admins slapped Ks.Int on the wrist for breaking the rules, I just hope they slapped the non-mouse hand. Don't want to hurt their money-makers!

Should be the notice: "Please keep your comments very short for those who have the attention span of a gerbil."
(last year)  #67 Compelling

This one's even longer, for those gerbils out there who are uninterested.

What Dopeshow said was very true and well worded. He made his point elegantly enough.

BUT!!! If you are truly tired of fakenicking, etc, then accommodations need to be made for teams so that it is no longer essential. If Ks.Int can't schedule a match because the asian teams are on such a radically different schedule with such poor lag to european servers, then changes need to be made to accommodate that. Why did Ks.Int need a stand-in? Because they could not meet the scheduling required for their match. So what are the solutions? Either get admins willing to be more involved in the scheduling, thus being able to help solve situation like this, or create improved rules for scheduling so that something can be done.

In my opinion, the individual crime is the perpetrator's fault, but if everyone commits the crime, then it is the lawmaker who fucked up. Strict rules are great and they help keep tournaments fair and timely, but you need to be able to work with teams if there are problems.

Ks.Int gets a slap on the wrist for breaking the rule, but tournament admins get a slap to the face for not figuring out the real source of the problem.

Let's say hell yeah...the scheduling around all leagues/tourneys especially when the brackets are world-wide is pretty wounded. Sure Ks.Int has broken the rules, but sometimes it is impossible to schedule the match in one week, especially with such a huge time delay between both sides. The resolution is quite simple - those games should be postponed for weekends or at least they should have wider selection of playdays (add 2 days at least). Then you won't encounter such problems so often...anyways good luck for both teams in next matches, we wanna see some entertainment ;)
Always there's one more stupid-man than you think :)
