The end of WarCraft 3 teams?

column, end, the1crow, warcraft 3

WarCraft 3 has become more and more popular over the last few years; players became stars, events offered greater and greater prize pools, the community grew massive, people became fans of teams like MYM or SK - or is it actually just more of Grubby, Moon and Lyn? Are you really interested in the teams or the players? And what's even more important is: are sponsors interested in supporting a single superstar who has the potential to win a couple of highly remunerated tournaments, or a team with many average players which seldom wins anything - and if they win as a team, will the prize money be that low, such that not much is left for their employer? Winning a team league is not about money, but prestige!

Just a few days ago Netherlands Serious Gaming announced that they won't participate in team leagues anymore like WPL-1, NGL ONE and the WC3L Qualifier. The management came to the conclusion that the level of success no longer outweighs the costs - they willl focus more on the solo events.

WC3 is already dying. Not to many old school players left. The very foundation of what this game was built on. Its big in China... But its China and not the whole world.

Well, considering the population, China is 20% of the world. And I think that there are more people living in China than in the other eSport-states (USA, South Korea, and some European countries).

But I have to agree that there are no competitive leagues except of the WC3L. And even though the WC3L may attract a lot of observers (I'm one of them^^) and does surely have a huge fan base, it doesn't provide that much to the teams.

I hope that teams will exist in the future because I have lived up with warcraft 3 teams and not single players - well, not literally lived up^^. It's part of the history of the game imo, and I don't want to miss it...

I also think so.
Maybe in Europe it's not profitable to sponsor a full team, but as far as I know sponsors of Korean Starcraft teams said that it's much more profitable to have a Starcraft team than a Basketball team or something. You just invest ~2 million dollars in that team per year, while you would have to pay much more for a Basketball team, and young people will like you. In my class no one watches Basketball while about 5 people are playing computer games very often.
But to hit that point we need big companies willing to pay for a team and maybe more fans (more attention on TV or in newspapers). Then 'we' could also build up fanclubs and cheer for a team, but I think that's far away. Maybe WE.Pepsi is a step in the right direction... They seem to be financial strong and I don't think that they will disband soon. By the way I think the same about MYM, but I guess WE.Pepsi is a better example because of the 'Pepsi' in their name ;)
