WCG: MYM.Strelok takes bronze

chinatt, jaedong, luxury, mym, stork, strelok, wcg

It has been known for quite some time that MYM harbors one of the best Terran warships outside Korea, but now it's official - Ukraine Eugin ‘Strelok’ Oparyshev is at the top of the world, side by side with the two of the best Korea had to offer for this year. With the WCG being over we can safely take a brief look at what stopped Koreans from taking all three medals.

Korea, South Stork, the best Protoss in StarCraft universe, glided through the group stage and shortly after it had to face the best Zerg in the very same universe - Korea, South Jaedong. This was the point of no return for the Koreans as it became impossible for all three of them to take the top spots, one of them had to fall out of the big picture. Zerg tried really hard to claw his way out of this one but Stork proved to be more determined to win and most importantly, more successful in doing so. Last step before the finals was China LoveTT, a player who proved to be on his way towards finals for a good reason - in case you're wondering which one - he's damn good. Stork lost a game but in the same manner as with Jaedong he took the other two games and secured his spot at the top where he awaited his last opponent.

Korea, South Luxury was a busy little bee on the other half of the brackets. He swiped away his enemies one by one until he reached Ukraine Strelok...and then he swiped some more as he had bigger fish to fry, namely Stork. If the last line sounded brutal then you should know it was intentional because that's how Koreans work - they come, slice&dice you and then send home in pieces with each of them crying like a newborn baby. Luxury was eager to win the finals but yet again the old fox Stork proved to be too slippery target for the Korean Zergs as he managed to claim the throne, thus officially becoming the best StarCraft player and ending this year's WCG story. However, the story was not over for Strelok as he had one more battle on his horizon, the one against LoveTT for the bronze medal.

With the Koreans settling their scores in the finals all eyes were turned now to the battle for the bronze between two of the best Terran users outside Korea. China LoveTT proved already he is in a very good shape while on the other hand Ukraine Strelok did exactly the same as he knocked out China Legend in the playoffs. At the end of the day it turned out Strelok will go home with a happy smile on his face after all. He has entered the hall of legends by securing himself the bronze, thus standing side by side with the best StarCraft players in 2008. Congratulations to Strelok as his bronze shines in a golden color to all of the foreigners out there because you might be representing your country but when the tournaments draws to an end you're doing much more, you're representing the whole community which stands behind you.

Let's take one last look at the WCG 2008 standings before we start browsing for VODs and replays of this great event (good things are worth watching twice, at least):

goldorzilver Korea, South Stork

really great achievement, Strelok. I think its almost comparable to a 1st place for wc3 cause the gap between the korean progamer and the foreign sc player is so huge.

it was his goal to avoid the koreans before the semi finals. He won against Legend and Lovett who beat Mondragon and Nony, two of the very best foreign players. So i dont think he was "just lucky"...

yes, playing against legend and luxury qualifies as lucky bracketing .)
