League of Legends - the next DotA?

2009 seems to be the year where the DotA-spinoff games are going to battle. This morning Riot Games announced that they are looking for beta-tester for a new game called "League of Legends".

Heavily inspired by DotA, and with Guinsoo as a developer, the game could be the next big thing. Some of the features in the game are that you grow in power and skills for each game you play, you get matched in a ladder-like environment - allowing better players to avoid newbies, and there is a much needed anti-leaver system in the works.

As seen on the screenshots on the official website, the game has a more cartoony look to it, though it has some of the same identifiers. Creep-camps and several of the clutch areas are kept in the same way as the original DotA-game, and overall it seems like the game has "just" been ported to another engine.

Mhm checked this out, nice news. Fast etc! I will try this game, dunno how the game will develope though. Hopefully it will be awesome, but reminds me of cs:source for some reason =)

lol, thats what I thought too, I dont think this will be much different from dota though, the gameplay itself is as good as it is, they just have to work on an observer friendly version of dota (and I think this is it) New looks, new styles, but actually the same game =)

in the website(forum), I saw that Pendragon is Director of Community Relations Does this affect Dota-Allstars ( the game and the website) and his relationship with icefrog in anyway? Just a little bit curious and concerned at the same time

Would be weird if IceFrog wasn't a part of the dev-team on that game tbh.

This does not affect DotA-Allstars, Pend will still continue to work with DotA-Allstars just like always. And Ice isn't a part of the dev-team, you can view the whole team here (I assure you Ice isn't here):

So working on a competing project that wants to exploit the userbase of D-A won't affect the site itself. See that was a new one. Thanks for clarifying the icefrog-issue. I assumed that they would have gotten one of the best level-designers who has ever worked on dota to help them... I'm forever blowing bubbles!

I don't really know about this. DemiGods is also coming out, and with DotA possibly being ported to StarCraft 2 too, there will be four different games - on four different platforms. I predict disaster (as always :D) I'm forever blowing bubbles!

It's a smart idea: make an attractive-looking take-off on DotA, utilizing its huge fan base, to make a buck. The RPG / RTS combo seems to be a winner. However, speaking in terms of high quality strategy gaming, I don't think it will be even a shadow of DotA. This game will peter out quickly after its release, like many take-offs on an original model do.
