DreamHack to drop DotA?

The bi-annual DotA-tournament at DreamHack is one of the biggest LAN-events for DotA in the Western world, but according to the preliminary list of eSport-games for DH Winter 08, the game has gotten the boot.

The current version of DotA has been subject to heavy debate in the past weeks, and this situation could add more to that fire. There has been made no official comment on the matter, but so far only CS 1.6, CS:Source, Trackmania and the Quake-franchise has been named as official games for the Winter-edition of DreamHack.

It could be a substantial blow for the Northern European DotA-scene should DreamHack discontinue one of the oldest - and most succesful - LAN-tournaments in the world.

There is still hope for the game though, as it is stated on the website that "more tournaments will be published later on". Even more, neither WC3 nor StarCraft has been mentioned in the tournament-list, and the announcements of the RTS-titles included at DH is usually done later than the other games.

They will add it later with all the other games they always have tournaments in, and DotA have even been one of the biggest at dreamhack so if they drop something they will drop something else... no need to try to upset people -__-

Lmao, if mym would have won in LA that news would have been there for a week now that SK won its already old news. I tought esports news is about posting something objective and not only good things for your own clan. Cause the first thing that happend is STFUANDSHOP if MYM would have won if it would still stand there

You are doing it wrong.

1. It is logical to write it this way as all of the other big tournaments at DreamHack have been announced.

2. I never said that DotA was completely out, or reasoned that it wasn't picked due to (.....) whatever reason.

I don't mind criticism, but please take the time to give me some constructive stuff instead.

i dont think its such a big news that dota isnt one of the BIG tournaments, so no reason to post news about it (where is your article about "DREAMHACK TO DROP WC3?")

maybe you should have waited til the next group of games is announced and then write an article about it (in case dota wasnt picked as a game)

I don't write news to be for or against any specific subject, but I am an editor and I have to work with the information that is available.

The angle I have taken goes like this:

If DotA is supposed to be one of the main tournaments at DH, it doesn't make sense to publish the other main tourneys (those with the high prizemoney) and not announce the DotA-tournament.

In my eyes, that is either downplaying the importance of the DotA-tournament - or a total drop.

While the latter is certainly an option, I do note in the news that this specific tournament has been announced later than the main tourney's at DreamHack on several occasions, thus nothing is sure.

Here's some constructive criticism, Phil. Flavor your articles with hope instead of this slight tinge of bitterness, and I'm not just referring to this article. Instead of saying why dota won't be included, give reasons as to why it should. It's good to be objective, but these are also your opinions - from a guy who presumably loves dota, or he wouldn't spend so much of his time writing about it. Tell the world through this outlet that you have, which is widely read, why dota is, after all, so great. So, for instance, if you claim that sponsorships from big companies is the way to go for the game, tell the world why and how this can happen. If you think dota deserves to be in the spotlight, explain why, because some people (perhaps organizers of tournaments) are not satisfied with the linear argument "because it has a big community". You are not a news anchor - you are an opinion writer. Go ahead and write your opinions.

A few critiques~

- It appears it would not have been difficult to discover that DotA (and probably others) will likely be added at DH later on. That's why this article is generally misleading.

- What basis is there to suggest that the heated discussion about the version has something to do with DotA being "dropped" by DH? It seems there is none, at least from the data presented.

Thus, the basic point is purely negative, unnecessary speculation against DotA, i.e. agitation. Why?

The current DotA-version has been subject to a heated discussion, right? That everybody can agree on.

This situation (the scenario where DH does drop DotA), could actually add more fuel to the fire. I don't say it will, nor do I suggest that DH will drop it due to the version.

What I suggest is that people would start arguing over where DotA should go to be taken up by eSport events; which it most probably would, because some people will blame the version, while others will blame something else.

Instead of just suppose that I mean every single sentence in a negative way, please try to read it again.

I think you might have taken my criticism as an attack-- it wasn't. I saw something I disliked, found it to be misleading, and then gave the reasons without attacking the author or giving an unfair reading. That should have been no problem. 1. As I understand it, in the past few years it was also announced later on, after others. Also, it appears to be common knowledge that they are not going to drop it, particularly from those who live in the country, e.g. the Swedish pros who commented. One can ask people with such connections. You may have mentioned such facts, but as I see it they still conflict with the basic premise of your piece. 2. Uh... thanks but I didn't misread it the first time. No need for that tone. Anyway, I question, with good reason, the grounds for making the connection between the debate and the possibility of dropping, which is most definitely implied and suggested in your article. There still is no connection, as far as I can tell, despite your exaggerated protests.

when you don't have any material to write a news on, don't just try to invent stuff. It is usual to announce the games in 2 parts, and its always the fast fps stuff that get announced first the rts later on. So the Big News about fake polemic is just kind of useless.

Wether a LAN event will present DotA or not is not up to the current (stable) version. It's always about the money, wether it will worth it for them or not. And as DotA has been growing and is still growing fast, it does worth for LAN organizers. DotA has a big community and all the news are visited by thousands of people. And yeah, this isn't news, this is rumour. Would be better if the article was changed to a rumour so noone would complain about it.
