Korea - is it all good?

evan_, gaming, korea, sc

For almost a decade, South Korea has been the most prominent market when it comes to eSport. The unique cultural blend in the North-eastern corner of Asia, has seen a multi-million business evolve around StarCraft - something that Western gamers have long been envious of.

While eSport is still taking baby-steps in the Western part of the world, South Korea has had cable-stations broadcasting games in primetime - long before it was possible to stream anything over the Internet.

But everything is not rosy. myMYM.com's guest writer, Richard 'evan_' Armstrong has taken the bull by its horns and are exploring the downside of the Korean eSport-adventure in his article "Myth of the morning calm". Here is an extract:

The accessibility of Starcraft works both for and against gaming in general. You'd be naive to believe that the prospect of mainstream adulation has no influence on the levels of youth unemployment for example. Since 2002, the unemployment rate of people aged 15-24 has increased year on year to 10.2%. The rate for men is even higher according to the United Nations Statistics Division, with 12.3% unemployed – that's one in eight. This doesn't compare favorably to other modernised societies like the United Kingdom which has rates of 7.8% and 9.3% respectively.

I wouldn't recommend my child to be a progamer? I thought the job of a parent is to help their offspring to develop to their potential. If it is to be a progamer, then give them your love and support.

And have you seen what a great shape many sportsmen are in. That is unhealthy? Wow! True bodies are taken to the extreme in sports, but there are also positive aspects. As in many other issues, there are pros and cons...think a little deeper. Instead of using greater force, perhaps a little bit of smart would help too. But if you keep insisting on greater force, then keep banging your head against a wall alot harder, perhaps you'll develop some gray matter.
