StarCraft Teams - Point of Existence in 2008?

excello, mtw, mym, rox, starcraft, teams

Thousands of Euros are invested into StarCraft teams and players year by year. But in fact we don't see many tournaments that make it possible to win huge amounts of prize money. The players outside Korea are also not that famous or even superstars like Boxer and others are. Now mTw wants to run up to the StarCraft hil while investing in a new team.

But where is the sense for teams like Excello, RoX or MYM to have a StarCraft team? Those teams are in fact companies that have to make money with what they do. Time to take a look into that question with an article called:

StarCraft Teams - Point of Existence in 2008?

Well done with this Crow.

Here is my comparison of the way the Korean and foreign SC scenes developed and how the difference in grassroots community results in differnce in skill level.

The Korean scene happened organically due to a combination of factors but mostly thanks to: 1) the influx of affordable PC cafes, and 2) the troubled Korean economy of the early 90s. The two elements of oppurtunity and means were there. Homes didnt have their own reliable net connection/CPUs and so PC cafes not only provided a place for people to play games and serf the net but also, and possibly unintentionally, provided the spawning pool for a thriving, rabidly competitive Starcraft scene. Couple this with the fact that, since no one was making money anyway invesetment in an online RTS competition/leagues didn't seem so insane.

I cannot stress the importance of internet cafes in e-sports. Players who come from internet cafe backgrounds will always dominate those who "trained" alone in their homes. Hence the reason why Korean and Chinese teams/players can always be found amongst the top 10 at any given time in any given e-sport. From Sky to Savior...all of those guys came up in PC cafes.

Western players do not really understand the importance of net cafes since most western countries in Europe and N. America do not even have a Pc cafe in their town. Visitors to Seoul or Beijing think of netbars as stinky, dank basements with dirty keyboards and mice. The fact is, only a small amount of korean pros ever owned their own PCs before going pro. Western countries have starbucks with wifi but we do not have starcraft, wc3, dota, wow, and cs breeding grounds at starbucks each with its own tight community of gamers helping each others' progress.

Part of the reason why Koreans cannot be touched by Foreign players in SC is due to a difference in their gaming upbringing. Also to be considered is the fact that Korean PC Bar gamers are all used to playing in front of crowds, always against better opponents than themselves, and with alot of immediate comments from bystanders. So when a noob Korean player gets outsmarted by an early DT drop due to hidden tech he is embarrased but there will be someone there to explain his error to him. When a young French kid gets schooled in BW on battle.net he just shurgs and then starts another game and lets the same mistake happen over and over again since "he is just playing for fun".

Western players, correct me if I am wrong, usually play in a quiet room without distraction and certainly without a crowd watching. When they lose it is frustrating but not shameful. Conversely, when Koreans lose there is shame and a loss of face involved. That is why we all saw BeSt's face turn green after being utterly demolished 3-0 by the God of War, JulyZerg, in the recent OSL Final.

Western SC team managers, know they cannot compete with the Korean teams skillwise, and thus only worry about turning a profit in some minor league tournaments and promotions. So we already see how return of
investment takes precedence over the game itself. So from a business perspective we see how ridiculous it is to continue to funnel money into an MYM starcraft team.

However, from a gaming perspective...from an e-sports point of view the idea of MYM not having a starcraft team is preposterous. If this organization, or any other, wants to have any credibility
as an e-sports team then it must foster a SC roster. Afterall, Starcraft is the most balanced, intelligent, and physical game in e-sports. It is the paragon of online competition.

Recently, I started playing SC from Beijing on the sc2gg.com's private battle-net gatewaty. Teamed with ventrillo it really is an amazing experince to be able to host, play, and commentate on games, in real-time, with others who love this game as much as I do. This is the closest thing I have experienced to training with a team or a community but still doesnt compare to the community I had when I played WoW over here in Beijing everyday in a local pc cafe for two years.

I don't mean to hate on the western e-sports communities. We have better websites, and forums than most asian counterparts...but our players' skill lacks because we lack the breeding ground of a net cafe and moreoever lack respectable leagues and the heros those leagues produce.

big problem for europeans is that they cant train in peace, you got your parents running around the house, variety of distractions, whereas in korea i believe you can entirely focus on your training which is one of the main reasons why they are so good - not to mention money being a great motivation.
