Online gaming is worth $1 billion in the US
After gathering data from October 2007 to March 2008, the NDP Group has estimated that online gaming in the US is worth over $1 billion - a year. It comes as no surprise that the biggest part of the income was generated by Blizzard's blockbuster-game World of Warcraft.
The top 5 games in terms of monthly subscribers for the first quarter of 2008 looks like this:
- World of Warcraft
- RuneScape
- Lord of the Rings Online
- Final Fantasy XI
- City of Heroes
In total, the NDP Group estimates that there is around 11 million subscribers to online-gaming in the US. These numbers also include people paying for online-games through websites though. Interestingly enough, most of the people that are signed up on gaming-websites like Pogo.com or Realarcade.com are females over 35 years of age. On the opposite side, most MMO-players are males younger than 35 years of age.
