Art of Mind Games

Art of Mind Games

We've had many guides in our community and all of them have one thing in common - they are mostly about one race in one game. What myMYM's editor Croatia Dendra intended to entangle with is something that is related to all three races of StarCraft: Brood War and at some points even related to games in general. Before you proceed to the massive article it is obligatory to warn you that everything beyond this page is based on his thoughts, experiences and analysis, you don't have to agree with him at all and he doesn't guarantee that what he has written is the best thing you can do, it's just the best the author could think of at the moment.

This article starts with a general introduction, separated in three chapters. In further chapters, it explains and researches how important issues like confidence, fear and torture are in eSports.

Art of Mind Games

  1. Confidence (published)
  2. Fear (published)
  3. Torture (published *new*)

Here is a snapshot from Part 3 of the article "Torture":

Yes, believe it or not, there are more ways to torture an opponent besides the more common, violent ones.

torture
Make your oponent furious

Every player enters a battle with a certain state of mind, mostly this state changes into an “I’m gonna kill you for that” or “World is pink and I’m victorious”. What you want to do is make your oponent furious or without any nerves left, so that even if he does manage to win the game he will still remember you in the future encounters. This works best if you are playing more games than just one. Everyone have a certain line, until they cross it they are calm and collected, so all you have to do is think of a way to make your opponent lose his "balance". Make him start making mistakes because he wants to get even with you and repay the torture you’ve caused him. How to do it?

Dota takes no strategy? Thats a new one to me. Every game takes strategy.

yes. every game requires a strategy ;) dota is an ums(use map settings) map. if they make it a game...

I know... but in DotA you dont have your own army.

The only way to harras is to pressure your enemy while creeping. It's not quite the same.

And remember:
DotA-strategy=teamplay

basically dota doesnt leave much room for creativity, most of the strategies are already premade and since the games has too few goals it's kinda obvius what your plans are and it all comes down to who can micro better and who can catch a hero off-guard. article is basically intended to make you try looking at your beloved game from a different angle, start thinking in a different way, etc., like go behind the "mechanics" of the game and try to enter your opponent's mind.

im pretty sure dota is capable of having a few mind tricks here and there, but that's on really the top of the top level when both sides have superb knowledge of the game (most of the tricks and bluffs dont work in general if the other person doesnt react in a proper way)

If force won't work, use greater force.

In DOTA the state of mind during the game is VERY important. Some feeding early can make many players feed the entire game while some other players will focus more and wait for the right moment to start owning.

Thats like any other game. I remember when people said Warcraft 3 was just a noob version of starcraft; now look. Its being narrow minded and saying a game doesn't take much strategy because its strategies are different that makes me not want to read articles like those.

To me, saying what you said is like saying this:

"because you cant use heat mapping and improve your strategies in DOTA; it takes no strategy."

DOTA, takes a lot of strategy and teamwork. Just like any other game. Now if you were to say "jenga takes no strategy" then I may agree.

you have to realise that compared to any rts dota is not comparable, it's like saying fps games are more strategical than rts...games are just different. if you wanted to play strategy you'd play chess or wc3 or sc or whatever, if not then you play other games or fun maps/mods. dota has a minimum strategical aspect like everything has - even pinball has a strategical aspect >.<

Thats not what im saying, Im not trying to compare them at all. Im simply saying that what you said was really ignorant from my point of view and that when you are narrow minded and rule things out like that then of course you will end up with minimal strategical benefits.

Its things like this that hold a lot of teams back, so many players cant grow because they play cookie cutter strats because they think that there is limited room to develope new things. People are professional because they are always out thinking other players and are able to adapt to NEW strategies.

It really bothers me when people stick to the bare minimum and try and dumb things down like this because the mass majority of people would agree or think the same way. Personally I believe DOTA has less routes to go, since the games objective is always the same. With games like cs/war3/quake/sc you have 1-2 objectives. Which creates more routes for you to go. But more routes doesn't mean that the game has more or less strategies then another game.

only thing that prevents dota from repeating itself are new heroes which are constantly added, - you add one more hero / tier and you get a whole new number of combinations. what i am trying to point out here is the mind games aspect, im not talking about inventing new combination of heroes, that's all mechanical and as i mentioned, every game has that type of strategical aspect, but making your opponent believe something and doing completely different thing, making him fear something that doesnt exist, etc.

all those things are not so present in dota because the map was just about narrowing strategical aspect even more and eliminating the macro aspect completely, making your whole game spin around just a single unit (controlling chicken to deliver items is a minor task), trying to level it up fast as possible and kill your opponents. philosophy in it is pretty much like playing K1 on PS2 only with added aspect of levels and teamwork.

anyway, my bad for going into this direction, didnt quite plan to go in such a debate since it's plain as daylight which game is how deep, point is that even maps like dota are not 100% about focusing on in-game details but also on opponent's mind.

i know i few things, its not all tactic and strategy in rts, tho micro (technique), has one of the fundamental role in these games, u could be a Napoleon, o Gasparov, but a mule with 5x micro than u could beat in dog-eat-dog match. So no same theme if we compare chess with w3

Of course in rts u need a special reaction in ur brain to manipulate multiple tasks more faster than ur opponent something different in dota, but dota has funcionalism... where 5 humans plays different roles and create sinergy if the do it good they can have a good teamplay and act as a unit , is another type of intelligence.

i think ur confused, do u realize whats the difference between tactic and strategy ? ^^

on the topic - i loved that little "clip" on cartoon network about f.e.a.r. long time ago, like they lose one person in their amazingly well-organised organisation, thus meaning member number 100 is now number 99, 99 is 98, etc. Hmm, guess it was funny at the age of <10 :D
