The curse of "Bonjwa"

bonjwa

If there is one thing that makes living in this world so interesting then it has to be myths and legends. Sadly, you aren't going to find out in the following text did the big fire dragons really exist or did Merlin really have an evil twin brother, but what you are going to find here is perhaps a bit more interesting story when it comes to us, hardcore StarCraft fans.

Not long ago in a far away land called teamliquid a French guy who goes by the name PoP figured it would be fun to do some research on those aliens from Asia, better known to us as the Korean progamers. What he discovered could be the greatest conspiracy of all times if we don't count the one "did Americans really land on Moon first". As we all know, if there is one place where it is hard to be a king of the hill then it has to be South Korea and every time someone takes that hill and stays on it for a while he gets tagged as a "bonjwa" - for those of you who don't know, that means you are considered as a godlike player with superior skills in clicking your mouse and moving it over the screen.

The story begins with the greatest player Korea ever had, the one who was, is and most likely will be on top for a while - Korea, South NaDa. His domination started in 2002, winning 1st, 2nd and 3rd MSL followed by a victory in the 1st OSL, all in the same year...but we're not here to admire his achievements, the reason why it is so interesting will reveal itself in a moment. His rampage ended in 2003 when Nal_rA won MSL instead of him. From that point on another monster terran took over the steering wheel and decided to dominate the Korean scene - Korea, South iloveoov. What he did was surprisingly "similiar" to the NaDa's winning streak. He won 1st MSL by defeating NaDa, then in 2004 won 2nd and 3rd MSL followed by a win in 1st OSL. With that his winning streak ended.

Now back to the future, or at least recent past. In 2005 another beast decided it's time to continue this tradition, a hero to many new generations of players - majestic zerg user Korea, South sAviOr. After winning his 1st MSL he repeated the same success in 2006 by winning the 2nd and 3rd MSL, ending his streak surprisingly wth a win in the 1st OSL, just like his predecessors. After two trully imbalanced terrans and one cunning zerg the time has come for a permanently cloacked ninja protoss to preserve the tradition and make our imagination play tricks on common sense - Korea, South Bisu. So far he managed to secure victory in 2006 in the 1st MSL by defeating sAviOr and then winning the 2nd MSL in 2007 just like many before him had done. Will he win the 3rd MSL this year and then the 1st OSL as well?

To make the whole story even more interesting the author somewhat luckily discovered that all of the listed bonjwas were born in November. Even though the years and days don't match it doesn't really matter as the chances for all of these players to be born in the same month are slim to say the least. If Bisu manages to repeat the history and then meet his great fall then perhaps yet another progamer born in November could take over the pen and continue writting this story that eventually might turn into a legend. Will this happen nobody can know for certain, perhaps the discovery of this pattern could be the jinx of it and our protoss hero won't suffer the same faith of the great names before him.

Once more, big thanks to France PoP for finding free time to make such a discovery, especially in this perhaps the darkest hour StarCraft ever had.

The greatest player Korea ever had is without a doubt Lim Yo Hwan. Being KeSPA #1 for what? 1 1/2 years constantly means something. NaDa's current losing streak has entered double-digits.

nada is the actual all-time best korean progamer, was proven some time ago, boxer ruled in the beginning when everything was wild giving him the credit for titles earned back then cannot be compared with value of the title that progamers earn nowadays, just check out nada's career and where he's been throughout these years, boxer just kept on dropping ever since nada came.

only reason why nada remained in shadow was because korea already had an emperor - boxer. it would've been bad for marketing to have 2emperors. i feel kinda sry because people dont recognize nada as the "ultimate" as much as he deserves. he has incredible statistics, has been on top for a long time and still is top class even though he is way back from 2002 :) boxer had his prime in what 2001? later on these new players took over and a classical boxer's trick (if you are outskilled practice 25/7 a sexy rush to finish game in 7min) nowadays simply cannot work - think he tried it vs savior or whoever, to do some of his silly rushes and got toyed around by savior.

ive seen nada top3 kespa for years, ive seen him being top class for years, only thing i've seen from boxer is being the father of starcraft so to say. when will you people stop glorifying him for his actions burried in the past? so what, he was amazingly no1 for an amazingly long period of time in year 1450. we're living in 2007, creating a game and being a pioneer is not the same as taking over the game and dominating it for years.

nobody said what boxer did was nothing...
im saying what boxer did was amazing in his own time...at the moment you cannot compare savior's domination and boxer's back then....i mean it is 30000x harder nowadays to win msl/osl, be top pro, etc. boxer Was great and his games on valhala vs YellOw are one of my fav, problem is he is gone, he did what he did, nobody can say he isnt greatest pioneer of sc progaming, but what nada did and does ever since he came....i mean his statistics are far more insane and some months (some is a relative term) there was some major analysis of korean progamers and guess who was the best of all? - yep, nada.

you can say what you want but people still chant bisu - savior - NaDa. hwasin is the new hope and so on but still nada is around here, never dropping down 2low. dont overrate boxer's past...im frankly said when i hear stuff like "legendary protoss is back", back to do what? only to show his mythical powers are gone and he's just another chobo to the modern progamers? legends should stay legends, boxer never retired, he stayed around and he is still capable of showing a good game once in a while but what does nada have to do to earn your respect?

he's obviusly done everything he wanted to, his dedication perhaps aint like it used to be but still he is going strong. i mean im sad everyone thinks only boxer tried to be creative and only boxer discovered terran's secrets. you think nada didnt do his own research? he put alot of effort into the game and not once did he get the fame he deserved and deserves.

look at iloveoov, damn, there are people that respect him more than nada just because he is boxer's aprentice, nada is nobody for them, just some guy who happens to own this game and has nothing to do with boxer, therefore he is not worth the attention.

now you'll tell me all the non-korean progamers around elky's time are better than draco? damn what draco did was incredible, it is 10times harder to become progamer as a non-korean today than it was back then. you just cant rank past records with the recent ones. just check kespa rankings and see for yourself where is boxer since 2002 when nada came...its just one tiny bit of nada's great career. i always loved boxer for some of his crazy games, never liked him dodging real fight by rushing, but oh well, all in all when you look at progaming he obviusly did more than anyone else, but still that doesnt mean i have to go blind and not see how amazing nada was and is...

I never said that NaDa was NOT impressive or NOT amazing, he definately has my respect, he IS awesome, winning 3 MSLs straight (right?), but nowadays, when I see NaDa losing to DarKeLf(FreeWinElf) or his loss-streak being > 10, it saddens me. The same which applies to BoxeR, applies just as well to NaDa now, too, you know?

Oh and btw, the chant is not Bisu - sAviOr - NaDa but rather Bisu - sAviOr - IriS(IriS not having same results as NaDa but being seen as the berserker Terran)

yeh true, iris is on top, but wasnt there some event and top player from each race was chosen 1st for each group or whatever and nada was chosen as the terran ;)
