How do you know something is what you think it is? And more importantly, why do you think you know what it is? To answer those questions, I could bore you with the theoritical nonsense of institutional history - I won't. Instead I can tell you that we as humans have a common memory. We store expressions, culture, words, meanings and many other things in that memory. It is expanding every day and people use it every day. It is the language.

So the real question could be; why has this common memory (the language) defined an apple as an apple. To speak, to communicate, we need some definitions we all understand. If I'm at the grocery and I say that I would like to buy two apples, then I would really like to get (what I think is) two apples. For the grocer to understand what I'm saying, and giving me what I want, we need a common definition of the word apple. That is why we have the language (Ok, I just bored you, I will try to get to the point).

There is cultural exceptions though. Look at the word "terrorist". In America, terrorists are usually portraited as brown-skinned guys, with a filtered beard and a Kalashnikov in their arms. In Iran, on the other hand, terrorists means the American aggressors - the actionman we know from Iraq. In South Africa during the Apartheid, Nelson Mandela was in jail for 27 years. Do you know what he was in jail for? Terrorism. Nelson Mandela, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize - imprisoned for terrorism? That doesn't make sense, does it?

Point is, you can't really tell who is a real terrorist and who isn't. I might be tempted to point out Iraqi rebels as terrorists, since I got friends who has been shot at in Basra. And the rebels might be tempted to point out my friends as oppressors and a terrorizing factor.

So, when is a terrorist a terrorist?

Quoting wiki:

Terrorism in the modern sense[1] is violence or other harmful acts committed (or threatened) against civilians for political or other ideological goals.

That is the definition of terrorism - that terrorists are not globally the same people for everyone is the same as with that not everybody that is your friend is also a friend of everybody else. Same goes to enemies, criminals and so on. Just because you do a crime in one country does not mean that you are a criminal in another one. Those words are of course bound to the political directions of a country / government. Just because you are a sinner in christianity does not mean that you are a sinner for jews/muslims, etc...

well i think terrorism originates from terror, a "pleasant" way of ruling over people, since terrorist usually don't target civilians just because they are civilians, but because targeting civilians is meant to put pressure on the government, religion or whatever.

There's a group of people who are trying to defends their religious with the violent, and to attack those who are against their religious, and basically, people would think that it is causes by the differences of culture. But most of the time, this kind of people were actually used by some forces for political purpose. And today, with the help of globalization, terrorism has been spread around easily and widely. And the battle for the anti-terrorism is become tougher.
