Games Convention

"The Nuclear NGL Hotel disaster!"

by Mark Peter de Fries

MarkBack from the NGL One season III finals, which as you know the MYM.WC3 won, amazing games, great atmosphere, "good organized", all in all a great event which I really enjoyed. Only if it wasn’t for the ultimate disaster experience called the NGL One team, manager and player Pension (Not Hotel), at least the one the WC3 players were hosted on…

I have traveled all over the world and I have tried 1000’s of hotels, from godlike Marriott and Hilton’s to scary HoJo’s (Howard Johnston’s hooker hotels), but never in my entire life have I been at a dump like the hotel the NGL One put this seasons players and managers in. Let me give you a few highlights from the hotel which cost 20 US$ per night, per person, which already says it all;

- 30 km away from Leipzig in a godforsaken city called Rötha
- The whole hotel smelled of cat piss or worse
- The toilets couldn’t flush
- No hot water in the showers, if any water at all
- 500 Meters to probably one of Germany’s largest "nuclear power plants", that’s healthy gaming!
- At least 10 things have died on each room’s carpet, which included blood, sperm, food leftovers and other nasty stuff. I didn’t dare to take off my shoes until I was ON the bed itself.
- Wallpaper falling of the walls, water running down the walls
- 6 floor hotel without elevator
- Several centimeters of dust all over the rooms
- And and and and, I could keep up the whine for several pages.

It is a shame I didn't have a camera with me, you would be shocked how poor it was. It was like being bombed back into 1940 in a warzone...

What I want you to picture yourself is that a real sports event placed Federerr, Beckham, Ronaldinho, Venus Williams and other sports stars on a hotel like that, what do you honestly think would happen? I believe they would all leave in anger and tell the event holders to go f*** themselves unless they relocated them, don’t you?

How is it that a kick-ass big event like the NGL One can treat star players, managers and teams like they are some sort of garbage they can just place in whatever cheap shithole they can find? Pardon my language, but this is simply, in no way, acceptable.

I for myself went there as there was nothing else left, which is my own fault as we booked to late, so I am not complaining on my own behalf, but on behalf of my players and managers. But what is the NGL One’s excuse? That they are too cheap to pay for at least a decent hotel like an IBIS for some of the best players in the world? That their administration forgot to book hotels in time? That this is the standard they want to accommodate players from all around the world in? I mean it better be the best excuse in the world, because you simply can’t treat the top of the pop in Esports with a hotel that I would not even put the dog I don’t have in.

A heads up from the MYM administration is that if this will be the case for the next finals, we will not attend, there is no way that we will accept to the treated like that and that is not a threat, that’s a fact! And I know for certain that the other teams feel exactly the same, so I suggest that the NGL One reviews their policy of how they treat the stars that attend their events for the future, otherwise no one will attend the next one.

Regards

Mark Peter de Fries

#3 These pics are surely the best I have seen from that Pension (Mark that word, it wasnøt a hotel, but a Pension), must be the "Penthouse"...trust me the rest of the hotel looked like and smelled shit.

the picture do look like you are kinda overreacting

I agree that the hotel looks a bit old-fashioned but not as bad as you described it

And FYI it's only a normal power plant and not a nuclear one and I doubt that it was only 500 m away, looks more like kilometres

I didn't like the NGL's management of the whole hotel situation. Also the fact they favored CS teams over WC3 teams, both with the fact that they stayed in a hotel closer to the GC, and that they got the full expenses paid package as opposed to the WC3 teams, and the unwillingness to discuss this point.

#7 See #8 - I would rather have them give the teams what they paid for that PENSION IN GOOD TIME and then the teams could book a HOTEL themselves and pay up to what HOTEL they would like to live in instead, the other stuff is hilarious and you have no chance of finding a HOTEL when arriving the day before you have to play, then you just "have to live with it", so its not like anyone had an option of living somewhere else...

Not bad xD I honestly thought my pension was horrible. I had to sleep on a couch, which was kinda small :P without a pillow. And the couch was around 1,8m x 40cm ~~
Neither breakfast nor a fridge. My whole weekend was fulfilled with Corn-Flakes and H-Milk. At least I only had to walk about 20min to be at the convention :P

The last NGL One finals in Berlin I was positively surprised. Players and managers were picked up by the staff, hotels were booked - although far from the event, a shuttle bus was driving in the morning and after the event.

Bummers were the limited amount of places, the hotel being booked until sunday only ( flights normally dont go on sundays, or are very expensive ), double rooms were for couples ( 1 bed for 2 people ). But as I said, I was positively surprised, as the standards were becoming better.

Shortly after the WC3L also started improving their support. Instead of hightening the prize money, they put it in after talks with G7 into the support of the teams by splitting up a considerable amount of money equally on the 4 teams. It was questionable if it was the right thing to do, as some teams profitted from it since they did not need any or very little travel support, since they had already paid flights by the Blizzard event f.e. while others had immense costs. The right thing to do would have been covering the flight expenses directly, instead of distributing the same amount of money amongst the teams. Teams should not be punished by the distance of their players locations to the finals location.

This NGL ONE I was not positively surprised anymore. As Mark has mentioned in his post, the distance to the hotel and the hotel conditions were untolerable. We were living in an old russian style built beton-plate pension which was just the cheapest thing in the whole area - and we were already in the pretty cheap eastern area of germany. The rightwing influence of the city, no train station ( it was in the neighbourcity ), the wonderful view on the powerplant and the tristness of graffitis everywhere around you when you looked out of the window was just too much.

Furthermore we are disappointed by the NGL ONE not providing trophies. As it seems they do not take the NGL ONE finals at the Games Convention that seriously, while everybody else does.

So far the best comfort / support comes from WCG, ESWC and Blizzard. Paying flight costs and arranging hotels is a must. Taking care of the players is even more a must. If players will feel badly threated or deceived they will refuse to play, like the Seoul e-Stars 2007 showed us when Tod refused to participate.

it's not a nuclear powerplant, it's one of the most modern powerplants, which burns coal, in the world :P
but anyway, i know rötha and i know it sucks hard but i think all the hotels in leipzig were full because of all the business men -.- it's the same case like last year

Coal powerplants generate 100 times more radioactivity than nuclear power plants. Not that I felt in danger at any time, but it is simply very uncomfortable.

And I believe that the NGL One had enough time in advance to know when to book the hotels.

sorry, but mercy, selfowned.

Do you honestly think, lets say its Barca vs Munich, UEFA CL. That the UEFA is looking and arranging the hotel for barca? well, youre wrong, its the TEAMS THEMSELVES, which organize the hotels etc.

i dont know how its in tennis sports, but could be the other way around.

and 1 more thing: stop talking "super best players from the world" "esport stars". They are just humans, and i think you can live in a bad hotel for 3 days if its for free.
(last year)  #24 MYM|Army

#23 you are wrong. Teams are being compensated for participating in UEFA matches, even the Toto cup compensates the teams for their attendance, which is the smallest tournament on a european level.

The teams are arranging the hotels themselves and are being compensated by the tournament organisers for attending the matches, which covers more than the travel expenses. If teams would constantly lose money on travelling around half the world with more than 20-30 people to some foreign countries to play football nobody would do it.

Then I do not see your point. We do not have a problem with arranging our travel + hotels, as this is what we always do. However the NGL ONE provides the accomodation like Blizzard, ESWC and WCG do, which was below tolerable conditions and that is what this article is about.

#25 - booking the hotel for you and your team isn't a problem but if event is providing it for you then show some respect to people who needs to travel half of the worl to get there so your competition show's good then put them in NORMAL hotel not it some shit place like mercy explained. If organisation can't afford normal hotel then they should sent letter of notice to teams so they can choose on time should they risk and take organisators hotel or book themselves in normal ones.

I like the fact that #18 points out that the NGL finals in Berlin were fine, as we ofcourse owe it to them to say when they doa good job, and last years hotel when we were playing the NGL season 1 finals the hotel were a 4 star one and was simply awesome, and this is probably why we are the most surprised and perhaps annoyed with the conditions this time, because we would have never thought that.

I think it was smart that Mercy posted this, very bad for NGL to treat players and management like this. It's good for this to be known so now maybe NGL will fix these problems for the next finals.

Sorry for all your bad stays mates.

Agree.

Organizers have to realize they cannot treat players and teams like this, thus this blog was a great way to bring public limelight into the things you people go through, similar to ToD and his controversial blogs.
