You should have known better, Mr. Lake

"The departure of compLexity's players to Evil Geniuses is pure evidence that the times are changing and that, even in e-Sports, it is all just business."

"...a traitor is a traitor. Alex, you are a traitor. There's no eloquence that can cover factual truth. The knife in our back will not be forgotten, nor ignored. "

Jason Lake's frustration was directed at Evil Geniuses' owner, Alex Garfield, who had allegedly engaged in talks with the LA compLexity's players hours after the collapse of the CGS, all this behind Lake's back.

Despite saying otherwise, the news came as a major blow to Lake's ambition to take compLexity back to the top-flight after watching the death of the CGS destroy everything he had taken years to build.

After all, we are talking about a man that had found himself not only unemployed but also separated from the men he once called his boys.

During his long time at the helm of compLexity, Lake guided his team to heights many considered unreachable, rented a five-bedroom house in Dallas just to suppress the players' practice needs and took the "boys" under his wing during the CGS adventure to give them probably the best e-Sports contract they will ever have.

So it was no surprise to find him bemused when he learned his players had turned their back on him after such a long and fruitful joint spell.

However, their decision to join Evil Geniuses is as shocking as it is predictable, especially because Lake's hopes of holding onto his men were solely based on the assumption that "the players would stick with the organization" even though it could be necessary to start it from scratch as even the now-deceased CGS controlled the compLexity brand.

And when he did this, he lost it all because he was just too imprudent, not to say naive. It was expected that Lake would have done more - such as have the players sign a contract as, according to EG, they were free agents - to retain the services of the team since he knew he would be helpless in case other organizations came in waving their money to give the players food for thought.

That because compLexity had never been a team of big sponsors. In fact, most of the team's funds had come from its owner, so when the CGS collapsed, unemployed Jake could not open his wallet to back up his talk of a coL return.

And "Intel-financed Goliath" Evil Geniuses - who had established themselves as United States' strongest organization when joining the CGS was in vogue - were the ones to make box office when they landed coL's quartet.

Garfield's organization did not have an international winning team; in fact, EG could not even hold down number-one status inside the country, so when the opportunity came knocking, he did not think twice about approaching la crème de la crème.

So what's in the cards for Lake now? From what it seems, he looks utterly determined to bounce back from this setback - that's what one would expect from him.

However, it doesn't look good for Lake when the best Counter-Strike players in the U.S. are already booked. He will either look in the old continent for an opportunity or wait to see what happens in the near future before making his move, and since the credit crunch may well lead to the death or weakening of some forces in 2009, Lake could find a top-tier team available in a matter of just months.

compLexity's future has been the subject of intense speculation, with reports suggesting Lake to be close to establishing a partnership with Jax Money Crew owner Alex "Jax" Conroy in which Lake would take the role of assistant manager, while Conroy would remain calling the shots.

The future for Lake and Conroy?

If this eventually becomes more than just "paper talk", then we will witness the birth of something that resembles the Swedish national football team and its two coaches, Lars Lagerbäck and Roland Andersson.

But should Lake be happy with being Conroy's right-hand-man? My answer would be no as I think he should not settle for just that. Both Lake and Conroy have helped turn eSports in the U.S. into what it is today and, as such, they both deserve to be on the battlefront but against each other, not holding hands, much because eSports should also be made with rivalries and that's one big there.

Returning to the main topic, there is absolutely no reason for Lake to react like that over losing his players. After all, he was the one that, for example, raided United5 for Justin “sunman” Summy in 2005 or that, a few months before, had brought Sean "bullseye" Morgan back from retirement after offering the ex-3D star the highest wages in the business.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to who has the deepest pockets. And this time it wasn't Mr. Lake.

The entire case is retarded. In his closing remarks about the CGS dying, Jason wrote that he hoped that his players would be staying [out of loyalty towards him] but said he couldn't promise it to the fans.

He has even done the same on earlier occasions, picking up left and right to form the inagural winning lineup of compLexity (Storm, Volcano, fRoD, tr1p, Warden etc.). The only one he actually transferred was Bullseye - who was sent out in the cold as soon as he got his hands on the other players.

While he might feel grief because of his former players; which - after all - is where he put all his money in the last couple of years, he is the sole person responsible for that mess. Around the time CGS popped up in the US, he jumped on the bandwagon - and sold his entire franchise to the CGS. Now moaning over that deal (which includes exclusivety on names, etc.), that just makes him look like a friggin retard.

Basically he is moaning because he made a crappy contract with a crappy company, and didn't worry two bits about what he would do should the CGS implode. Lack of normal brainfunction is usually punished when running a business in a capitalistic society, and this case isn't at all different.

I think Lake still wants to call the shots, but I don't think he has the same drive as just a couple of years ago.

Nice article Miraa, I think you hit it right on the spot with this one

wow... I tough a lot more of you Mira before this article... you clearly are just as clueless as the rest of them...

seems why you don't get why Jason thinks Alex is a traitor... Alex used to the the Assistant GM of complexity during CGS. They where friends, and then Alex goes behind Jason's back and stabs him? yeah I would be mad too... Jason will bounce back higher than before, mark my words...

#5 if you read it carefully, there is no mention to that in the article because that's not its focus. Instead, it covers what lake should have done but didn't to keep the team from leaving, and resulted in him criticizing Alex when he made a pure business decision.

Overall I think the article is pretty accurate, but for the sake of clarification, the talks with the former coL players were not done behind Jake's back ;] The move had been contemplated for some time, but EG did not act on the idea until we found out that other teams were attempting to pick up the players. When that happened, Alex contacted Jake and shared his intentions to try and make the move as mutually amicable as possible.

Obviously taking his bread and butter team away would never have been something Jake agreed to let happen, but I resent the impression that's been left in regards to the move being some kind of shady "under the table" operation.

P.S. Next time you're writing an article about this kind of thing, feel free to contact Alex or myself for a little information to aid your background research because as far as I know, no attempt was made.

Nice article. Well, Lake is in pretty bad position and yeah at one point it always comes to "who has deepest pockets". Everyone would be very disappointed after seeing his players leaving all of a sudden, and further, your "friend" actually stealing them.
I guess he trusted them very much and did not have any reason to believe they would leave him after so much time spent together but your point is good MIRA, put friendship aside when you're doing business.

He quit his job in Atlanta and moved to Los Angeles for the CGS. And yes #3 eSports is turning into what professional wrestling did....drama.

As far as I remember he quit his job earlier than at the CGS move, but moved to LA with the job as GM. Could be wrong though.

#4: Volcano was never on compLexity. The original lineup featured Bullseye and members of Warden's team prior to coL, eventually they began picking up the free agents like fRoD, tr1p, and storm, ultimately picking up Sunman when Bullseye went MIA (although he was already dead weight on the lineup).

Mirra: This article still doesn't ask the right questions. Someone needs to ask the questions: Why did the players make this move? If Lake is on the verge of something big, why not give him a chance? Where does Rambo fit into the entire equation?

Also, Alex is a smart enough businessman and human being to know how this situation would reflect on his character, enough so to make me think that however this went down, he didn't expect it to villainize him as much. It would be interesting to take a look at what really perpetrated the entire ugly side of the situation.

Article is very well written and a good read, it just doesn't really say anything or ask anything important.

Nice stuff, I'd argue that Alex played his hand perfectly. He had just enough involvement in the CGS for his benefit but also maintained a very strong EG side on the side. Unlike everyone else in The States, he didn't put all his eggs into one basket.

"Both Lake and Conroy have helped turn eSports in the U.S. into what it is today"

E-Sports in the US is pretty much dead.
