Olympics, Slugs and Grubby's Blog..

The Olympics 2008
Has anyone managed to watch the Olympics recently? The past week of watching Olympics was so enjoyable - even though sometimes I would sleep late and look like a panda because of it. I watched some different categories - both men and women - and I wondered how many categories are there in Olympics? Can anyone tell me so I know how many gold medals in all are up for claims? I would guess probably more than one hundred.

Reward for athletes:
I learnt that athletes get fame and recognition when they win a medal in Olympics, though they don't win any money or prize. But some countries have their own reward system for their own athletes. Canada reward athletes 20,000 USD when they bring home a gold medal. So far, I don't see a single reward from any country that is bigger than Singapore's reward.

Why didn't Singapore win a single gold medal? The reward is $1 million SGD ($710,000 US) for each gold medalist. Guess we have to accept the truth, Singapore is strong in financial sector, but not in sports. You would have thought that such a small island like Singapore would probably produce some good swimmers huh? More info about Singapore's reward system, click HERE.

UPDATE: If it's accurate, I just saw that there's 215 categories. China is currently leading with 45 gold medals, followed by USA with 26 gold medals.

MASS SLUGS in the garden!
In the summer, Manuel's mom usually leave for the caravan for mini holidays every weekend. Sometimes she would leave a note for us - to keep the slugs away from the garden - away from her flowers! Because of a good summer and an interest in gardening, she is now the owner of a colourful flowergarden. So last weekend evening, we entered the garden and looked around for slugs and snails. We just couldn't imagine that we would find sooo much of them in just 1 garden. They are eating all the flowers and plants. In fact, they seem to have an insatiable appetite. If we don't get rid of them, Mom will probably come back to a half empty garden.

So we put on rubber gloves - because we don't dare to pick up the slugs with our bare hands, they are so slimy! - and start the dirty job of collecting all the slugs and snails that we can see.

Slugs collected on the first day.

Slugs collected on the 3rd day, which happens to be a rainy day. We realised a lot more slugs will be present on rainy days. The wet floor makes it much easier for them to move around, so they don't need to use so much slime!

When we came out of the house.... we saw there are even much more slugs on the pavements near our neighbourhood! Mom's friend says it's the year of the slugs, as there will be a lot of slugs this year.

We decided not to kill the slugs, because we read on the internet that slugs are an important part of the eco system. They clear up the decaying matter, and the ducks prey on them. Also because we feel bad about killing creatures, taking away their lives so easily (we don't feel the same about mosquitoes because they actually attack people). So we walked for 5 mins to another more secluded part of the neighbourhood to find them a new home. Ok! Job done!! :)

When we buy our own house, we wouldn't want to grow too much plants in our garden. It's too much work, we wouldn't have time to take care of it. :p

Grubby's first blog on MYM
His first blog topic was in defense of a poor boy France Toad who had been attacked by the SK trolls and news writer Malystryx.

When reading the Malystryx's post of "SK wipes their hands with MYM in 4-1 Victory", I saw they used pictures of an innocent guy to make fun of him, while gloating about their victory over MYM. It's ok to announce victory, but they shouldn't overdo it.

The pictures posted in the post was Toad's picture photoshopped with speech bubbles, quoting him say things he had never said before or would never say. When I first saw that, I felt sorry straight away.

The first feeling I got was disbelief and I ask "Why?". Just months ago, before the NGL play-offs in Berlin in February, Malystryx was the one who wrote a big article about Toad, interviewing him and quoting him as a very cool guy and the biggest SK fan. Now just 6 months later, he wrote this news to insult Toad. No offense to Malystryx though, anyone could make a mistake or a wrong judgement at anytime.

Where's the love?

A week ago, Toad joined MYM as coverage staff. He came to join MYM community after months of being insulted and flamed by SK trolls in the forums. He wasn't happy hanging out in SK forums anymore. Anyone who ever visit SK Warcraft III forums would understand that some of these people could be harsh and mean at times. They have no mercy with what they say. These people love dramas, and thrive on insulting/flaming famous people online. Just look at all the useless/unconstructive threads that were created, then judge for yourself. If you are in Toad's position, how would you feel, enduring this treatment for months in the SK community? People are teasing him, calling him names, just because an article was made about him, making him kind of famous.

The fact that he joined MYM community has nothing to do with being a "traitor". In his heart, he had always admired Warcraft III players from both SK and MYM - such as Lyn, Remind, Grubby. Even till today, nothing had changed. He can be a MYM news editor and still be a fan of any player he likes, even if it's from another team. Even if one day, he is a total fan of MYM, it's also his total freedom. It's normal for people to do a switch at anytime.

Take for example: You play Starcraft and thus you are a big fan of Starcraft. When Warcraft III comes out, you switch games. Though you play Warcraft III now, but it doesn't mean you are a "traitor". You could still be a fan of both games, even if you only play Warcraft III and joined the Warcraft III community. Why can't anyone do a switch? Even if you become a Warcraft III fan now and Starcraft is history to you, you are not a "traitor". I find it so silly that some people so easily name someone else a "traitor". Just look it up in the dictionary and find the real meaning.

Toad is a passionate fan of the game of Warcraft III and the professional gamers revolving around it. Before his accident, he was into sports (great at skiing/snowboarding). After a big accident which nearly end his life, it ended his ability to do sports. Though he was lucky to be alive, he had to walk with permanent pain in his knee. Eventually he discovered Warcraft III and found lots of fun playing it and speculating games. He became a big Warcraft III fan.

In fact, I think being a fanboy is something to be proud of. It shows you are passionate. Being a fan of something makes you feel alive!

Even if one day, he stopped being a Warcraft III fan, he is still a great person, a kind hearted soul. I wouldn't call him a traitor.

Don't gang up and attack on someone just because you think it's funny.

Manhunter, 2 crores really isn't THAT much, in comparison to Singapore's offering. Even the Philippines is offering some 200,000 US. It's somewhere around 50,000 US. It's not that much tbh. People make more money just getting a regular job in America. If you go to college, usually by now people fresh out of the Uni can make that much, if not more. But Singapore is a different deal. You can win once for Singapore and be pretty financially set for a long while. In India, naturally yes, they seem to look at crores to be high, but once you actually get over the fact that it's not even that much =/. It may last in India due to standard of living, but not really anywhere else, and economically speaking, it's less than 1/10th of what Singaporeans get, and 1/4th of what Filipinos get.

i know its not much wat i mean to say u will earn a lot in modeliingand advertisements once u become famous i believe u dont know true india yes standard ofliving is low in india btw 2 crore indian rupees is 461,573 us$ is that 1/4th or 1/10th maybe my calculations r wrong plzzzzz correct me if iam wrong

Great Blog!

1) USA and Australian swimmers are just amazing! i really enjoyed watching them ! Russia isnt so good with gold medals this time , but anyway we are the best :)

2) haha Good garden job:) hope you enjoyed it :D

3) Toad is a good guy , and i really dunno why some ppls calling him "traitor". I was a huge 4K fan ( actually i still a fan ) , i was always supported 4K and etc.
When 4K Wc3 was disbanded ( i was a 4K Wc3 fan), it was the most saddest time in my life . I just could not imagine , that the team i was supported for years is gone.... the story of 4K Wc3 is over... but now , i'm here in myMYM. Just by logic of ppls , who is blaming toad , i 'm traitor. Even if 4K wc3 does not exist , i still be a traitor , coz i was ( still ) a fan of it !? so am i traitor? No i'm not!
Just we live in present , not in past.
The same situation with Toad , he maked step in future , step in the new chapter of his life with myMYM! Anyway he can still be SK fan , even if he'll work for myMYM

P.S Toad joined as Coverage Staff , Cassandra fix plz ;)

Such a funny move from myMYM, the website that accuses a player of dischacking with no proof whatsoever and use its "rumour section" in order to avoid any blame for attacking a person.

I do not think you have anything to say to SK Gaming for publishing such an article, shall I remind you that Toad went to NGL or WC3L playoffs I can't remember with the SK squad and was considered as actual SK member by the staff, the players and the newsers ?

However, I'm wondering what will be your reaction if Toad ever does turn his back on your team as he did for SK Gaming, maybe another blog from sweety grubby ? Ridiculous.

Somehow, the olympics spirit can be linked with esports. One occur in reality and another one in cyberspace. The most important things is to link everyone from every part of the world when the sports progress. I have a virtue, that one day, this 2 would combined together, creating a new world..

not rly, olympic spirit is far from the cyber world, cyber world is run by money, money, money, games come and go, players call themselves athletes? i believe e-sports are the next step, just like it was probably weird when chess was declared a sport, but it will take years, probably decades before e-sports can unite with "regular" sports. you can get away at wcg by playing silly games just because they earn alot of money, but you dont see at olympics children building sand castles because it brings attention and it's fun to watch - other values are respected, values that simply dont exist (yet!) in cyber world.
If force won't work, use greater force.
(last year)  #61 laskAMAZING

totally disagree.

cyber world is run by money, money, money,

so is the whole olympic games. It was, some years ago, led by the spirits but it isn't anymore. The games are all about the money as you can clearly see since they are thinking about setting a limit for participants from china. You may ask yourself what this is about and if they got the skills they should be able to participate. It actually is right but the money counts. As you can see china is dominating nearly everything except the swimming and the sprint and maybe some other things too. The fact is that a lot of countries refuse to show the olympic games just because their nationality just doesn't win anything. Therefore no money is being payed, resulting in a change of the rules which is taking place MAYBE in the next 4 years.
(last year)  #62 Dendra
Dendra
well once you meet the people that go to the olympics and compete/train with them i guess you'll be qualified enough to know what drives them, key parts of the olympic games havent changed over the last decades, hell even centuries and it's never about money, athletes often miss their chance to win huge amounts of money just so that they can prepare better for the olympics, etc. Also legends of athletics are a different universe, compared to them cyber sports are like..building castles in sand.

Right now comparing cyber world to the olympics is like comparing average pop groups to olympics, thats how different these two are...sure teenagers worship their young idols but that doesnt mean they accomplished anything worthy of comparison to the actual legends in music industry.

The 2008 Olympics will see the return of 28 sports, and will hold 302 events (165 men’s events, 127 women's events, and 10 mixed events), one event more in total than in Athens.

The chineese didnt haven an equestrian team, so this boy who lived in england, but was 1/2 chineese, applied to be on their team. in 8 years, the boy got £1.8 million from china, to buy elite horses, tuition, equipment ect. When the time for the boy had come at the olympics, to proove his value, in front of the chineese people who spent so much money and time on him, he fell off the horse.

(What a waste of money)

But your right, I know this girl who was chosen to do gymnastics for GB @ the olympics, but refused to go, as it would cost her more than what she would gain from the experience.

olympics have been amazing so far, perhaps disapointing american team(s) didnt qualify for the finals in 4x100m, same as i felt sad seing wariner running so badly at 400m and two of my fav 800m runners failing to get into the finals, many sad results but still impressive results are flying in from all sides.

Everythin' is fantastic Cassandra, I'd tell you!! Except the scattered showers when i watched Phelps received his record-breaking eighth Olympic gold medal in 'The Water Cube'. It's OK to get a cab back cos we got those volunteers to help us, it was really crowed by the overwhelming reporters afterwards. I guess its the same everytime when Manuel wins huh? hehe

It reminds me the photoes i saw my friends do, the way they eating escargots with Tabasco sauce in France....:D
