Team Structure

Far and above, Night Elf and Undead are the two most popular Korean races at the top level of WC3, so it's good to have people who matchup well against them. However, it's good to save the players who matchup well versus Human and Orc for the occasions where someone will throw one out at you.

An ideal team would be to have at least 1 solid player of each race, and have specialists for each map and matchup.
This is one reason why China World Elite has had such success with China Human InFi and China Human Sky - there just aren't many people specialized for taking down Human. Similarly this is why Focus was so important for MYMs run – his Orc mirror has been top notch in a field of many Orc players, such as Grubby and Lyn, who have struggled with this matchup.

An ideal team would be to have at least 1 solid player of each race, and have specialists for each map and matchup. Note this does not mean that having more than 1 of each race is a bad thing, as long as they are diverse in their strengths and weaknesses.

In the case of MYM, they currently have Netherlands Orc Grubby, Korea, South Nightelves Moon ,Korea, South Undead Lucifer and Korea, South Undead Susiria.

Grubby plays well versus most races, with an unusually strong matchup versus Elf for an Orc player, but he isn’t the best at Orc mirror. Moon is great versus Human and Orc, but has had some troubles with Undead and Mirror, especially lately (Recent losses to Space and Xlord). Lucifer has probably the best Orc matchup for an Undead player (recenty displaying this in a huge win over Lyn) and is solid in all matchups, and Susiria is an excellent mirror player and plays well versus Elf.

The only thing lacking is Korea, South Human Storm, who is available, but not in the shape he once was – being one of the best Human mirror players in the world, a matchup where many Human struggle. In WC3L Season 9, Storm took down ToD and Sky multiple times throughout the offline finals. He would be great to take down players like Sky and InFi. Recently though, MYM has used him in NGL and WC3L - perhaps hoping to light a spark under him.

Storm at WC3L S9 Finals

Storm was an important part of MYM's Season 9 WC3L Championship

Equally important to note is that players such as Grubby and Lucifer have unusually strong matchups where traditionally their race has struggled, Grubby versus Night Elf and Lucifer versus Orc. This can help to stop what would normally be a nearly guaranteed point, in the case of an Orc versus Undead on Lost Temple or an Elf versus an Orc on Turtle Rock.

again i have to disagree with you, FoV have the overall best play against orcs. overall that is, lucifer have rarely pulled big vs orc wins, except now vs Lyn, which he have lsot to many times before. and hehave yet to beat grubby ina official game.

Maybe all time, but seeing as this is a meta-game article, I can't base this around things that were. FoVs shape is clearly not the same as it was in 4Kings. In any case, wins against Lyn would prove you are pretty good versus Orc, even if you don't want to consider other matches versus (arguably) lesser players.

Then again, I never claimed it as fact, and Lucifer himself said as much in regards to his shape v Orc.

Good to know, eventho i hold spave above Lucifer in any matchup at this point in time. I wouldn't go so far saying your got a good UvO matchup at the point of one win after several defeats, rather i call it that at last he have learned how to handle Lyn, maybe not even that seeing as Lyn is very capable at chainging his OvU mu, I would even say that happy is stronger vs orc overal the luci is, now it was a while since a saw luci vs orc now. but going from not to far away results i say happy is the better of them two.

To add, i might be wrong here, maybe fridays game vs Lyn will show us, i'd be imprissed if luci took one map. and that is not meant in a bad way.

Id have to say that a Moon in shape has no bad matchups, and one of his strongest is perhaps vs. Ud. The reason for his recent losses does not have to do with matcup but rather him being in a period of not playing as much and not keeping up his ideal shape, which has to be very tirering :)

About Luci's strenght vs. Orc I'd say it is somewhat true. When he is in his best shape he is nearly unstoppable vs. all races though, and him and FoV have been neck to neck on who has been the best Ud's vs. Orc and NE.

I think it is hard to say that players have bad matchups. Ofcourse that is true to a certain point, but most of these top players would still win vs. a weaker player if they were in their best shape. The reason why opposing teams would still opt to get a mirror vs. Moon is not because Moon is weak in mirror, but because you can't eliminate the random factor in the matchup, making the mirror much more likely to win.

Generally when I say a player has bad matchups, it means that against players of relatively equal skill, its harder for them than their more favored matchups. The only time I ever see Moon struggle while in top shape is in mirror, but like you said he has taken some time off. You and Reis both seem confident that Moon / Soju can beat the other, and I have to say, it's entertaining to see this match in so many MYM v SK matches.

Infact we are not searching for mirrors for Moon but rather trying to get him vs. the best players of opposing teams, and ofcourse Moon vs. Soju or Remind is not the best for us, but with them having two top NE's it is harder to avoid.

And Moon is infact rivaling Soju in being the best NE vs. Ud player, Moon just has a different style, but when he plays good he can complete demolish Ud players :)

can u explain a few seasons ago in the wc3l finals vs 4k, you used moon vs zeus and moon vs fury? what happend there?, why didnt you use moon vs grubby or tod?

You dont get to pick your opponent, you just choose maps for your players ;)

Yeah to add to Nordahl's point, a lot of the time players will put one of their weaker players against the other teams strongest player so that his impact will not be as great and their better players will have another chance to grab points.

It's the exact opposite in NGL, have to use your strongest v their strongest.
