NGL or Elimination Style

NGL or Elimination Style

In the lesser known NGL style, there is a starting map chosen at random for each round / playday. Both teams submit a pool of 4 players, one of which is a starter for the first map. Each set is best of 1. The loser is eliminated from the match. After one team loses, they choose which player from their pool to put in next, and this player gets to choose which map the game will be played on. Each team may only use the same map once (with exception to the starting map). There is also a limited number of “Jokers” that you can use to “revive” a player who has already lost to play again.

While WC3L is based on diversity and versatility, NGL is based purely on the skill of your players, and the planning of your manager.
While WC3L is based on diversity and versatility, NGL is based purely on the skill of your players, and the planning of your manager – the matchups mean very little. The reason behind this, is that with any managerial planning at all, with the exception of your starting player, your players will get to play their favorite map against their favorite matchup.

To view the difference, we will show you again the classic SK v MYM matchup in last Seasons NGL Finals.

Starting Map:

Korea, South SK.SoJu
vs

Korea, South MYM]Susiria
 Twisted Meadows

This is an interesting first map for this matchup as MYM and SK each have plenty of NE / UD to put on this map. Soju has a nearly unstoppable NE mirror, so I think SK wanted to get Moon out of the way if they happened to put him first on a map Soju is comfortable beating him - Soju is also a very good player against UD. Susiria has a great UD mirror, and a pretty good Elf matchup, so it would make sense to start him here.

Susiria wins game 1.

What does SK do now?

SK opts to put in Korea, South Undead Reign to try to take down Korea, South Undead Susiria. Why didn’t SK put in Lyn? My guess they were holding him back in order to take down Moon on Lost Temple.

Korea, South SK.ReiGn
vs

Korea, South MYM]Susiria
 Twisted Meadows

Susiria wins game 2.

MYM goes up 2-0. SK now needs to do anything they can to prevent Susiria from getting 3 points (requiring only 1 more point total from 3 MYM players)

They put in Korea, South Orc Lyn and Lyn chooses Lost Temple, pretty much a guaranteed point between equally skilled players in the Orc v Undead matchup.

Korea, South SK.Lyn
vs

Korea, South MYM]Susiria
 Lost Temple

MYM is still up 2-1 over SK.

Naturally then MYM puts in Korea, South Nightelves Moon in his best matchup, and he chooses Terenas Stand.

Korea, South SK.Lyn
vs

Korea, South MYM]Moon
 Terenas Stand

Surprisingly Moon loses to Lyn, and Lyn evens the match at 2-2.

At this point in the match, MYM has lost Korea, South Undead Susiria and Korea, South Nightelves Moon, SK has lost Korea, South Nightelves Soju and Korea, South Undead Reign.

MYM's remaining player pool:

Korea, South Undead Lucifer
Korea, South Orc FoCuS

SK's remaining player pool:

Korea, South Orc Lyn
Korea, South Nightelves ReMinD

MYM has used Terenas Stand as their only map, SK has used Twisted Meadows and Lost Temple.

MYM now has a precarious situation. If they put in Focus, he would likely win; as previously stated, Orc mirror on Lost Temple is his best possible situation. However, he would then meet Remind on the map of his choice, and would almost definitely lose Orc v NE on Turtle Rock. However, putting Lucifer against Lyn, even on an Undead favored map like Turtle Rock or Twisted Meadows would be risky, and even then, you force Lucifer to play Remind on an Elf favored map, even if he beats Lyn in a difficult matchup.

MYM makes a safer bet for a (relatively) sure point and puts Focus on Lost Temple.

Korea, South SK.Lyn
vs

Korea, South FoCuS
 Lost Temple

As MYM had hoped, Focus wins. MYM then leads 3-2. SK responds with Remind on Turtle Rock.

Korea, South SK.ReMinD
vs

Korea, South FoCuS
 Turtle Rock

Remind wins, and the match is tied 3-3.

It comes down to Korea, South Undead Lucifer against Korea, South Nightelves Remind on Turtle Rock. And we know who came out on top this time.

MYM Victorious at NGL-ONE Finals

MYM all smiles after winning NGL Season 4

With this in mind, MYM has managed this perfectly. The only event that didn't go to plan was Moon losing his choice. Other than that, the match was chalk. Every matchup went the way you would expect (with possible exception of Susiria vs Soju on Twisted Meadows, really about even).

I have to criticize SK for their managing in this match, I would say that they should have put in Lyn immediately after Susiria beat Soju. Reign would be a good player to put in against Moon or Lucifer later in the match, and you have to think Lyn would beat Susiria on Lost Temple.

Meet Your Makers later won the Grand Final 4-2 over SK Gaming yet again.

You can easily see where planning the maps that you use, especially when you have 2 top players that use the same race (Susiria and Lucifer for MYM, Remind and Soju for SK, Sky and InFi for WE to name a few), is extremely important to win. Making sure that you complete the objective of your players getting their best map in their best matchup (or at least top 2) is a key aspect of winning in NGL format.

you're forgetting humans are not robots, nobody sais you will win or lose in a certain situation, example with moon. managing the team doesnt depend just on your choice of player, it depends much more on player's state of mind, luck, etc.

sure if a map is imba ofc you will pick the best player possible and try to plan just one match ahead...basically it turns out managing is no more difficult than basics of basic chess, planning one step or so ahead. mym won because lucifer was the better player that day or simply had more luck, making a philosophic work of how incredible managing made that happen is making an elephant out of a fly.

on a side note, i have to say korean style of cw, as we like to call it in sc, is completely not realistic, technically if you have the best of the best in the world then that player will win any team and you can have top notch team based on one player. naturally this is the hardest possible example but worth mentioning.
it does make managing the clan much more fun and easy because it is obvius what player will which team use once you already know his opponent and possible maps on which the game will be played. in a normal clanwar with 1v1/2v2 matches determining the result it's hard to put a good lineup, will the opposite team put its best player 1st so you can either sacrifice your weakest player while letting your strongest one take an easy win elsewhere or you can risk it and put your best, as well? i guess the amount of luck and skill required from managers is higher in a normal clanwar, it's hard to predict how a bo3 will go, you have to consider what player your guy might encounter and how will that bo3 look like, etc.

If force won't work, use greater force.

FoCuS would likwise win vS Lyn in a orc mirror at temple? I do love focus but that is just the overstatment of the week

Consider that on this map and this matchup, I think in the last year, Focus is 4-0 v Lyn. I don't think it's an overstatement. No disrespect to Lyn, who is probably the worlds best player right now.

I think what Mirhi really means is that the Mirror MU on LT is favorable for FoCuS. His chances o winning that one is far greater than any other MU. And you have to give him credit. He is probably the best Orc-mirror player in the world (taking down Lyn multiple times).

I do agree that Lyn is best in mirror. I'm with you here. But i don't think you can call it a likely win in a event big as this. I don't eventho i favoured FoCuS myself here. But a likely win in just to much in my eyes: )

lets just say it that way. that the chance of focus winning lyn on LT is higher than on the ohter maps.. :-)

Its never meant by the mym.wc3 managers that focus > lyn. Cuz lyn is a really strong gamer, but on a good day and on some maps Focus has a chance to win, one of those maps is LT.

Of cpurse i know this, I did not mean this as a shot at you. Only that my thoughts are that it could be like 55-60% to focus to win, maybe he is insane at temple, like "gad damn that guy is insane" insane, but i haven't seen that but still the thing is to think of it as a likely win, is a overstatement, i mean sure you guys know he can do it and probably thought he would do it before the game, and i did to, altho bias: ) but likey have to be like 75-85% atleast shouldnt it?

When someone is a 2:1 favorite (pretty heavy favorite in betting usually), thats only 66%, so depends on your definition of "likely" or "probably"

If I may offer some insight again :)

I think SK was counting on facing an Ud on TM and used Soju cuz of his strong performance vs. Ud. I think they know that Moon first would not be an option because Moon would be saved to face Lyn.
When Moon lost to Lyn we did see the match as being more even again, since Lyn is the strongest mirror player in the world, the reason for going Focus instead of Luci was that should Focus win we would have the best condition going into the final matches, but should Focus lose, Luci would have a better chance vs. Remind when the map choice was Reminds.
Ofcourse Focus winning was the best and he earning even more respect doing so, but both Reis and us saw the match as being mroe even at that point.

About not using Lyn right away vs. Susi I have to say that I agreed with Reis. When he is facing a team where Moon is still unused, he does not want to use his strongest player that can potentially take out all of our players on their mapchoices (except for Moon). He is thinking that he wants to be able to use Lyn as a stopper for Moon as Moon is the player on our team that can also do an AK. I'd have to say that in NGL MYM vs. SK it is a game of getting the other team to use respectively Moon and Lyn to increase endgame chances of winning :)

I line up my hair perfectly!
