Flaming on the Internet

The internet offers us the luxury of communicating with people sharing the same interests. It also opens us to praise or ridicule from our peers. Ever read comments from a person, thinking "God what an idiot, i loathe this guy." Question is: Why are people so mean on message boards?

I am sure most of you are familiar with the word "Flaming". How do you really feel about it? What effect does it have on our emotions, our sense of well-being?

Flaming: defined as the hostile and insulting interaction between internet users.

Places where people often flame: Forums, Internet Games, Internet Relay Chat(IRC), sometimes even Windows Messenger(MSN) and e-mails.

What Flamers (usually) do:

internet flamer1

  1. When they responds to a post, their response is usually not constructive, does not clarify a discussion, and does not persuade others.
  2. Make up things about the person they dislike.
  3. Tell (or lie) about how smart or cool they are. (eg, "I got a doctorate degree in.." "i got a hot girlfriend..")
  4. Act like a psychologist when they participate in discussions. (eg: "Clearly, by using the word SUPERCILIOUS, it shows he is a person who is very... ...")
  5. During discussions, they personally attack someone who does not agree with him/her. That's probably because they think that they carry the only valid opinion.
  6. Talk with the intention of upsetting or offending other members of the forum.
  7. Hang around the forums almost everyday, ready to shoot back at any challengers.
  8. When you expose their lies, tear apart their arguments, make them look like a bozo, there's only one thing left for them to do - Insult, insult and insult. So beware!

Why do people flame?

internet flamer 2

Why do some people behave so badly on message boards, forums and blogs? What drives them to say things to others that they probably would never say in person? There can be many possible reasons to this. You might even be able to list more reasons than me.
  1. Online Anonymity: When you're online you're relatively anonymous. Sure, someone could look up your IP address and then find out what part of the country you live in if they really wanted to dig, but we all know that most people either don't know how to do that or won't bother. Most people are too busy to waste time tracking down trolls. So obnoxious people can feel free to insult people, stir up contention and harass others. When you're sitting behind a computer screen posting obscenities or being ugly to someone far away, you know that you will never see this person or be contacted by them once they see your comments. This emboldens some people to say things they would never say face to face. Much of this behaviour is cowardice.
  2. Insecure: They might have a case of low-self esteem (feel powerless and insecure in real life), thus when they flame and win arguments on the internet, it gives them a (fake) sense of power. People who really like themselves and have healthy self esteem have no need to bully others.
  3. Attention: Some people crave attention and enjoy making trouble for others because they get a rush from it. They do it because they know they have an audience.

(Maybe some of us may have gotten into a heated argument or flame war with someone at some point, but people who do this regularly have a problem that has more to do with their basic character than just seeing a comment that makes us upset.)

Internet Flamer 3

Dealing with flamers:

What is the best way to deal with flamers?

  1. Stop feeding their egoes. Ignore them. It can be hard when you see someone posting incendiary comments, but chances are they posted it just to get a rise out of someone. It takes self-control on your part to ignore them, but once you decide to let it go, you will find that ignoring them is quite easy.
  2. Understand why they are doing this. It's possible that they feel miserable or feel the need to feel better about themselves. They might not know how else to cope with their insecurities, or maybe they themselves do not understand why they are doing it, or why it felt good for them. If we understand them better, perhaps we can be more forgiving.

Concrete Proof
of today's flamer:

To end this article, I present this Warcraft III replay (ladder replay of MYM]Grubby vs fx.): It's an example of today's internet flamer. Maybe you'll get a few laughs, anyway, enjoy! :)

Hahaha nice read. The replay was just lol. Altough I don't agree with grubby's Dog>Cats. Grubby gets a lot of offers online. Like having the chance to play lan with flamers or messing with their sister lol. Grubby does a good job of playing along rather then having his game screwed up because it. Playing reverse psychology LOL.

Vbadgirl really fits the flamer profile. You'll almost think this article is talking about her.

2) Make up things about the person they dislike.
vbadgirl in #37 "encourage her to go deeper and no so.. shallow and superficial."
Funny that she said other people's blog are "shallow and superficial". Her own blogs are horrible and unprofessional.
Read this for example and compare.
http://www.mymym.com/en/item/996.html

3) Tell (or lie) about how smart or cool they are. (eg, "I got a doctorate degree in.." "i got a hot girlfriend..")
vbadgirl in #37 "and I can bet you one thing Grub.. 90% of these guys didn't knew 85% is non verbal communication but I knew because I happen to have studied NLP at the university that I am currently following (psychology-sociology)I strongly suggest you read the gesture book by Peter Collett and find out what NPL actually means"

The rest of the points fits her as well
5) During discussions, they personally attack someone who does not agree with him/her. That's probably because they think that they carry the only valid opinion.
6) Talk with the intention of upsetting or offending other members of the forum.
7) Hang around the forums almost everyday, ready to shoot back at any challengers.

Vbadgirl's been stalking Cassandra's column for a few days now. It's very obvious what she's trying to do. Low. Sad.

and by the way, Vbadgirl you are wrong about age strictly linked to maturity.
You are 27 years old, and look at how you behave. rofl

You are 28 this year to be exact. Grow up!

But I got a feeling that flaming in a game actually works for the one winning ... it somehow has an added advantage =S

Like some of my classmates ... tearing thru the game like so tirelessly and ends the game wif an all mode sentence ' easy game, noobs ' . I feel very disgraced to play alongside them .

You said :
"Flaming: defined as the hostile and insulting interaction between internet users." Principia n°1.
Well, the ''F word'' should be described more precisely.
The flaming attitude is on the internet, nothing more than words, eventually corresponding at an attitude.

"How to deal with the flamers"
If the solution is to ignore flamers, it's an hostile attitude towards them (they are internet users and according to your word, "miserable" people with an extravagant ego who are looking for brulat conflicts, aren't them ?), you're in contradiction with your first principia, you're ''flaming" the flamers.

I could also ask you if internet, particulary video games like CS and war3, were specially created for non-violent interactions between players like "Grubby" and his old mates ''Zeus" and "Fury", well known for their legendary manners
(NO I WOULDN'T MENTION THIS OLD 3VS3 GAME where you could hord from Grubby's mouth such things as ''I hord your mother got AIDS, I laughed when I learned it" or "Germans are such nazis").

mmm... i think a few ppl in the whole world can bring facts that no1 else knows.
and some facts need to be shown once and again.
That being said.
Well written article but i have to agree with badgirl about that it was an enumeration of facts (known or unknown), and lacks a "deeper" thought.

Anyway i've enjoy the posterior debate even more that the article itself.
Nice pics.

Great blog! i would like it to be a bit longer next time :D

Somehow i get the impression that MYM pays Vbadgirl to heat on the discussion. Btw when i read Her posts i get agressions, duno where they come from. On sk-gaming people where used to flame her for everything she said because she was provoking everyone. Looks like it will end the same here.
(2 years ago)  #106 JohnnyB-122

Indeed. I get the same aggression when I read her comments. She is infamous for being a big troll and people always call her a "Cyber B*tch".

She polluted SK forum, and too bad she wants to pollute MYM too. :(

Loooooool, nice replay! Nicely played, Manuel.

About the article - I thought that its pretty good when I did read all comments. When I read the article itself I proved myself right - it is indeed an outstanding peace of art ^_^

If I was active enough to post blogs on this site, I could've start a good discussion ;;

btw Visarik hi <3

life is funny.

whats about "flaming on a high level"?
reason 4: maybe its part of the internet (or maybe even rl) entertainment for some ppl?
what kind of entertainment would an esport community site, just like sk, mym or readmore have, if there werent any flames?

just dont take things too seriously :)
(2 years ago)  #104 TechnoEcstasy

OMG! it's actually for me to post something grubby migth see? I sincerely hope it's not too late.
Grubby! Your a wonderful player :P you have entertained this computer nerd for years <3 <3 <3 I have enormous respect for you ... just a story about my impressions of you... when I first saw you were getting good (You might have been divine before but I didn't see it wasn't so into wc3 then) you started doing bm in 1on1 and also that strat in orc mirror where you used witch doctors. I created a new folder that I named "The revolution" because you really built the standard for orc and the whole wc3 community befited from it.
I remember even ne players going beastmaster hawk first because there was just simply no way to counter that blade master xD .... now of course the standard have changed and as you know it's possible to counter bm with dh :P.
But I still have that folder with replays from the good ole' 1.17 days x)
Just wanted to show you how much you can mean to people and thank you for entertaining the community /bow

there seems to be a correlation between many internet gamers (or users in general) and easily hurt feelings.
anonymity is a two edged sword as one can really dish out the snap-bombs with impunity until the shit-quake drops on you. this can really distract your performance- especially if you believe what the shit-ants are sayin'

the best way to deal with shit-flames is to continue silently raping their base or maybe to go and take your aggression out on roshan.
(2 years ago)  #114 Zandaa

Nobody ever writes articles that are always deep, meaningful and entertaining to everybody, but at least you're writing, and it's actually being read by a lot of people, which is more than most people have a chance to do. Just be happy with that, instead of fighting over the 'who is the resident blog queen' bs.
