Part 3: Gaming equipment

We usually ask progamers on interviews how do their parents and friends react to the fact they're earning a living thought gaming. Now, how does your entourage react to the fact you rule a company involved in electronic sport?

When I tell them that I’m in gaming they say, “Oh, you mean online gambling,” and they are very impressed. When I explain, “No, it’s PC gaming hardware,” their eyes glaze over and they go back to their crossword puzzles.

Did anybody support you when you first talked about launching a professionnal gaming equipment company?

Actually no. Back in the late 90’s PC gaming was such a small niche and developing hardware was even less attractive than software development and people thought we were crazy. I’m still crazy, but boy were they wrong.

Lately, Razer released the Habu mouse, which was created in cooperation with Microsoft. Could we expect to see a cooperation between Razer and Logitech in a foreseeable future?

We’ll definitely be working with other companies to deliver cutting edge gaming technologies to the market, but Logitech is not a company we have any plans to work with at this time. I’d definitely like to ask all gamers to keep an eye out for some of the collaborative works we have coming down the pipeline as they are much more exciting than anything you could imagine most manufacturers in the industry doing.

Do you think there's still place for new "components" in the professional gaming equipment market?

Absolutely! We have a long list of desirable products which we believe we can create and improve upon. I can’t give away any trade secrets, but over the next few years you will be seeing a number of new, and we believe evolutionary, gaming products.

In your opinion, what would a progamer need more than a good mouse, keyboard and headset

A really good mousing surface and perhaps a nice desktop speaker solution. Did I mention that the Razer Mako speakers are in development and should retail in the Fall of 2007?

Thanks for your time Robert! Do you have anything to add?

Only to thank you for the insightful questions, for your interest in Razer and the opportunity to speak to your readers.
