High level human players expand against undead 90% of the time. Only a handful of players choose to play without an expansion.

With the 1.22 patch, teching to tier 3 without an expansion is less feasible due to the staff nerf. Rifle + casters are also not very effective as they are easily dominated by Abominations and Destroyers since several patches ago.

Thus, this article will mainly focus on how to defeat a human with an expansion as the fast expansion strat is the most effective way to overpower the undead.

Comparison between UD and HU

Human has the best tier 3 army in the game. Flying machines are the perfect counter to large numbers of air units. They have the greatest movement speed in the game together with hippogryphs. Gryphon riders are also powerful units.

They only require 4 food for such a strong unit and they have two very strong upgrades as well – Animal War Training and Storm Hammers. Knights may be the weakest tier 3 melee but they can do their job well in slicing up fiends. Furthermore, their damage has been buffed in 1.22.

Not only does the undead have inferior units, he might often find himself outnumbered in army size as well. It is important to keep up with the human in terms of army size.

As an undead player, it is absolutely necessary to maintain a good lead in hero levels or you will stand no chance of winning. It is also important to reign the skies with Gargolyes or Destroyers and gain map control before the human reaches Tier 3 and obtains his own air units.

UD vs HU in ESWC – 0:8
UD vs HU in WWI – 2:4

Sky towered Lucifer once on a Turtle Rock side spawn and ToD played MK with dragonhawks with a tier 2 expansion once. Both of them opted for a fast expansion in the rest of their games.
