MYM.cs vs eSTRO - The conflict

As most of you people know at this time the WCG admins for Counter-Strike changed the decision that MYM.cs won fair and square. So maybe it´s time to explain the whole story and I´ll try to make it pretty short but it could also be a small book of what happened during this afternoon.

We started to play against the Korean team eSTRO this morning and it went very well for our guys and we won the game without any problems at all with the score 16-9 and 16-9. Everybody was happy and we´re in the quarter finals against emulate! from France. After around 20 minutes we heard that eSTRO filed a complaint against us for using "duck jumps" which aren´t allowed in World Cyber Games and eSTRO said that it was our new player KF3 that made it. KF3 went directly to me and explained that he´s actually the only one in MYM.cs that can´t even make "duck jumps" so it´s nothing to worry about.

Everything went well and eSTRO didn´t find anything at all. But they kept on watching the demo for our other players after that and they even installed wall hack to check all players in every angle. After nearly two hours, yes I´m actually telling you the truth they haven´t found anything illegal from MYM.cs and the guy above the head admin for Counter-Strike said in front of the press and TV that he´s made the final decision about the whole situation that have taken over two hours since the match was over.

(eSTRO while checking the demo with wallhack for a duck jump)

MYM.cs won the game and this is the final decision and it can´t be overruled he said and left. All the press went to the press area and told the world what happened. Mark "Mercy" came to me and told me that now everything is 110 % done and we´re in the quarter finals and the decision can´t be changed again.

Slightly after this decision a bunch of Korean persons with VIP and SP (Special Persons) arrived to the Counter-Strike area and confronted him. At this time more or less media from all over the world was present, all esport sites and TV stations and filming everything.

And after like 30 minutes from this when everyone was waiting for the game to start against emulate! the responsible guy for World Cyber Games, Counter-Strike arrives and says that there has been a change and that MYM.cs don´t win the game. He says he´s sorry and he has made a big mistake and he takes all the blame. What happened was that eSTRO after 2-3 hours found a suspicious duck jump from noLA in MYM.cs and they are shouting that this is actually duck jumping. The head referee decides that this is against the rules and should give a yellow card.

After a lot of discussion whether it is a duck jump or not the referee say that MYM.cs will lose the map and it´s 1-1 and a third map should be played. That the two suspicious duck jumps that actually wasn´t duck jumps according to a lot of proplayers and they even showed the admins that it wasn´t in game doesn´t matter. A third map should be played. Nor that they didn´t change anything in the results or even was near the other team was interesting.

MYM.cs at that time asked the referee if they are allowed to check the existing demo if eSTRO made any duck jumps them got the answer.

- Sure you can check the demo but if you don´t find anything you´ll disqualified.

It was pretty surprising for us that eSTRO get almost three hours to watch the demos for any broken rule made by MYM.cs but we get disqualified if we don´t find anything in it.

Why can you file a complaint against one player and you don´t find anything on him and after that use like two hours to hunt for things on the rest of the players and MYM.cs is not even allowed to watch the demo without risk for being disqualified?

(Five happy guys MYM.cs before all the problems arrived)

At this time our players was very sad and felt very disappointed and tired for waiting more than three hours. And they also felt betrayed as the highest responsible guy for the tournament said that MYM.cs win and this decision can´t be overruled. What really happened? How can he change a decision he made in front over all media from all over the world?

REAL from MYM.cs came to me with almost tears in the eyes and said to me that how can they do this to us. This is not even happening. REAL told that he was standing besides the Koreans and saw they signed the document there they accepted their loss against MYM.cs.

This was totally new for me and I ran to the head admin and asked him if this is correct. Have they signed the contract that they accept they lost the game? He answered me yes and I asked if they did why do we even have this problem if they accepted their loss? He was sipping for air for a moment and told me that they filed a complaint and after that signed the document that they agree that they lost the game.

Why do you sign a document there you agree that you lost the game when you want to file a complaint?

This and a lot of more things came up and it didn´t matter what anyone in the world said. It´s going to be a third map or we can pack our things and withdraw the game. No compromises and the decision stay.

We were given 15 min to decide if we wanted to play the third map or make a forfeit. Mark and I said that in our opinion we should pack our bags and leave because this is the most hilarious thing we have been seen since the birth of esport. But we understand if the players want to play the third map as it´s a lot of money on stake. After a discussion the team decided to play. I was heading to the admins to give our answer and was on my way back to the players when the head admin came to me and said - We are going to play de_dust2 as the third map.

The map that eSTRO beat both fnatic and mibr in the group play. For me it was more or less like a joke when he said it and I asked how dust2 was chosen. And I got the explanation that he draws the map by him. Not with any people or with the teams. As you all can understand we felt like this must be some kind of conspiracy or something because whatever we come up with they will do everything in favor for Korea. And of course when it´s Koreans that is responsible for the tournament and when all these things happened it actually feels like it. All the sites and all the people involved in this had the same opinion except the referees and the Koreans. The entire world was posting articles and news about it and it felt like the whole world against the Koreans.

Was all this right way to solve the problem? Was it done in the right way? Why are some people allowed to do as they please and others don´t. And I really feel with my players and also feel with fnatic that had a similar problem against eSTRO and couldn´t even file a complaint as they signed the document that actually eSTRO did against MYM.cs and accepted the loss.

It may not be a short story but I really tried to make it as short as possible.

Yours sincerely,

Daniel "Nostra" Thornell and the players in MYM.cs

i think a german team would not stay cool. i think the "fitschis" would get a reallife faceshot if they did so in germany or against a german team.

Thank goodness, that's only your opinion.
But maybe you got too many "reallife faceshots", that would kinda explain your out-of-place-attitude.

#44 great point about a primitive reaction. No one condemns it but I'm sure most UNDERSTAND it, even I can admit I say things I shouldn't have said but due to the nature of human beings, we do it anyway.

I think most of you are blaming the wrong people (hell even I got it wrong the first time I heard about this), eSTRO are NOT to blame. WCG's head referee or whatever he/she is is to blame.

It was that referee who made ALL the decisions, from changing his original decision to make the map default win, to suspiciously choosing dust2 from out of no where to not allowing MYM the same liberty eSTRO had of 3 hours to dissect a demo for duck jump.

However one point I'll acknowledge is eSTRO are hypocrites, they accuse MYM of duck jump when there is a youtube video out showing them clearly duck jumping. Furthermore, one can presumably speculate eSTRO is even less sportsmanlike by taking advantage of the Korean presence/stakeholders but that will never be confirmed or admitted.

MYM got the bad end of the stick and it must be even MORE frustrating because lets be honest, they weren't performing since their 2nd at CPL Winter '06 and they were starting to get it together beating eSTRO fairly (they beat fnatic AND MiBR). Let's just hope they won't be too disheartened, as the community understand their frustrations.

for me it is unbelievable that people here tolerate the behaviour of estro. they simply ridiculed all the things wcg wants to stand for ( it is supposed to be the OLYMPIC GAMES for esport).

oh and one last point: do u really think that these korean sponsors/vips whatever came to the conflict just randommly or because the refs called them? plz u cant be that naiv...of course estro and the korean team called them to put pressure on the refs. that is the reason y they changed the verdict.

anyone sayin it's not estro's fault, lol
it's ok to try n do everything in ur power to win, as long as it's honorable - i.e. playing wholeheartedly or something like that
what they did was messed up, n as #55 stated, ofc estro (as an organization) had somethin to do with the koreans sponsors showing up
n wtf is up with pickin d2? this is blatant corruption

if they screwed me over like that, i dont think i'd stop on saying "get cancer and die"

One big F***ing joke, talk about unfair conditions, I mean seriously you cannot expect things to go well for WCG from now on? When several top teams all experience the same treatment from unknowing admins that in itself says somthing. Down with WCG.

Yeah #62 that is why this whole situation went the koreans way. what a surprise. to say that estro was being good sports about this is retarded. someone duck jumping would not cause you to lose a match in the first place. completely lame to try and get a win you didnt earn over a duck jump. lol pathetic and WCG really showed its true colors this year.

i feel sorry you had to see this happening, i saw it once when players united against a guy to ban him forever just because he was "impossibly too good with an improvement impossible in such a short period, so he must hack",

it's nothing unusual in esports, there isn't enough money involved to secure clean and non-corrupted organisation, etc.

same was and is happening with football, handball, basketball, etc., how many times has a team won just because the judges did "too much work"...only sport that actually managed (somewhat) to defeat such corruption is football in its highest leagues/tournaments. (ok not to forget tennis which has that video thing now if you disagree with the referee)

korea is too important for wcg so they can easily pressure the admins, whole organisation, etc.. only way to prevent this is to make very specific rules so that no holes can be found in them, ensuring admins are as neutral as possible and so on. problem with esports is that many kids (best term i've got at the moment) play it, you can see 16year old boys being progamers, do you really expect them to act mature and say - "ok you were the better team today, we don't deserve the money, best of luck to you in the rest of the tournament."

even if players are 20+ their brains are still on like level of a 10year old, not necessarily in real life, but when emotions+cash gets involved you can get all sorts of reactions, including the lowest ones "my daddy is bigger than yours" or "drop dead".
